Texas A&M fans - why is there so much emphasis on being an alumnus to be a fan?

I wandered over to the Texags forum and noted the following
1. A constant and consistent need to keep mentioning "t-shirt fan" in as many derogatory ways as possible.
2. There is a difference and pointed distinction between an aggie fan who is an alumnus and someone who is not and this is often used in lieu of logic to win an argument.
3. There is even splitting hairs to the extent of tags/symbols next to the user name being different for alumni, spouses of alumni, family of alumni, other a&m fans and lastly fans of other schools. I can understand premium and free members but this was fricking silly.
WTF happened to just being fans of a particular school and having just that in common with everyone else instead of the need to having an asinine hierarchy and knowing and being reminded of your place , and worse accepting it, like a fricking 1300 BC Egyptian society.
Thank god for TD

huge schools that let everyone in always feel this way. Michigan State fans are the worst about it.

The way they explain it, to be an Aggie you need to be an alumni or student. Anybody can be an Aggie fan. I kind of feel the same way about the Razorbacks. I graduated from the Fort Smith campus so I am not a Razorback, just a Razorback fan.

I am an aggie t-shirt fan myself.
I think the term 't-shirt' fan is being used to describe a 'bandwagon' fan. You know, those who only like the team when they're winning. There seem to be a lot of those over in Austin, which is why it rubs Ags the wrong way.

From what I've gathered just being on this board is that Texas has an absurd amount of these "t-shirt" fans. So maybe A&Ms counter to that is we have a large fan base who actually went to the school?
eta: See what I mean, as soon as I post this an Ag. has already confirmed this.

See plenty of stickers around this area for the aTm Association of Former Students, which suggests anyone that attended, not just graduates, can join.
LSU calls it the Alumni Association, which by definition is also open to those who attended but didn't graduate.

There was a fricking thread on there about how to apply for tags by downloading a greasemonkey script or by adding other JS to your client!!! WTF is that!
There were aggie fans who were complaining - Unbelievable WHINING - about DILUTION of the QUALITY OF THE TAGS!!!
They felt that if everyone were given aggie tags and similar tags or some crap - the worth of the AG tag would go down or some such shite like that.
What was worse -was that the other dumbass aggies were supporting that!!!
Thank god for the gazillion forums on TD - don't need to venture out anymore There IS nothing better out there.

When you are interviewing someone for a job or are in a social club that matters. You are on a fricking internet sports forum!!
The issue is not about being an alumnus it is why it matters to anyone whether the fan of the team is an alumnus or not - does it make it any difference?
All that matters is whether you are follow the team and want it to win and discuss it with others. Why the frick does it matter if the guy you are discussing it with went to school there or not. Do you whine less when you lose and does he laugh less when the opponent loses.

I think its demeaning. I'm glad I'm an Alabama alumnus and not just a t-shirt fan.

Because due to our futility on the field over the last decade, we have no "t-shirt" fans.
Most Ags use it in a derogatory way because we're constantly dealing with a bunch of ignorant folks who jump on the longhorn band wagon and subsequently bash everything A&M. So the issue was dealt with by referring to them as t-shirt fans in what I believe is a method of deflection rather than one of triumph.
The bottom line is that any sensible Ag should love having fans of the team that are not directly connected to the school...They're a benefit. We haven't enjoyed that benefit lately ans so we've tried (rather emphatically) to twist reality so that it appears t-shirt fans are a nuisance and subordinate.
It's quite dumb and potentially alienates future valuable resources.

They've got deep-set issues with Texas. You'll find similar attitudes at other secondary schools
