re: Texas A&M fans - why is there so much emphasis on being an alumnus to be a fan?

Busey, why are you a necessary presence on every A&M bashing thread? I would think that having gone to (or being a fan of), such an inconsequential university which boasts merely a notre dame-esque basketball program (no, I'm not being strictly literal), you'd be the last one to attempt to flame or pile on.

I will look forward to dominating your school in every facet save basketball (and we'll get some of those, too)...and no, I don't need some diatribe from you proclaiming and describing everything there is to know about UK hoops. I'm sure you have a template entailing all things Kentucky and round ball on standby.

Because it gets people like you riled up and I'm bored. And A&M will hardly dominate UK in football. Arkansas has a losing record to us, and y'all have a hell of a lot of trouble beating them.

Personally I have no problem with "t-shirt" fans, and I wish A&M had more of them.

With that said, if you attended Sam Houston, SFA, UNT, Texas State, etc., its stupid to talk shite on behalf of a school you were too stupid to attend.

Choke artist or too nice, I dunno. Guy should've completely butchered the pigs but decided to coach not to lose instead. Frustrating.

I was going to stay out of this.....

Why are we worried about A&M's reluctance to allow non-grads to be Aggies?

I just wonder why they wear those weird costumes to games and have male "yell leaders". Their mascot is a Shelty, that is troubling at best.

In the old SWC, I was young and just thought they were weird.

You'll find similar attitudes at other secondary schools

Not sure what you mean by "secondary school" (since A&M will be only the third AAU member in the SEC next fall)

As far as joining the Association of Former Students, you have to at least earn your Aggie Ring to be considered a former student (95 hours, 60 in residence as an undergrad, not sure about the grad/Dr requirements). They have an entire database on the website.

A membership in the AAU was a big thing upto mid 80s but in today's world, of instant and worldwide collaboration , focused areas of non-standard research, funding from non governmental sources, it has been rendered obsolete and existing merely due to inertia and a misplaced sense of tradition in prestige.

The main point I was trying to make was that the Aggies seem to be instigating and inordinately fond of preserving a culture and class structure based primarily on what seems to be "sour grapes" envy of more successful schools.

In doing that they seem to be moving closer to what they profess to hate and becoming the "fan base" with fake pride and entitlement based not on what is being produced but what ought to have been because they think they are better and deserve it.

If that was the case, why have only 63 schools been honored with this? (It was 64 until Nebraska's was revoked for some reason)

A classic case of "t-shirt sip" is Michelle Beadle. She failed out of the Austin campus and spent the rest of her college days at the San Antonio one.

She claims to be a longhorn and gets very upset when corrected with the fact that she's in fact a "Roadrunner".

To my knowledge, the Association of Former Students will consider you a former student if you've attended class at Texas A&M. You don't have to attain a certain number of hours, you just have to have been accepted to the school, enrolled in and attended at least one class to be a former student.

And "secondary school" is intended to rile you up. The longhorns have taken a pounding from us across the board in athletics, and academically we are right there as well.

A&M actually has scoreboard on every D1 university in the state right now. We're a nice catch for the SEC.

It is not related to the original post about A&M's wierd-quasi-snobbish-penis-envy-fake-pride but please read the statement again.

IT EXISTED for one main purpose in the latter half of the 20th century - Prestige and inertia to get rid of it.

It is a relic of the past and the absence of its membership is not something to be worried about and the presence of it is something that is not cared about.

The new membership has to be ratified by 2/3rds and they all get into a whole scale pissing match each time someone proposes a new member .

The benefits are almost none now.

Nebraska was kicked out due to a stupid accounting error on how they calculate the medical research funding considering the actual medical school which was part of UNl was a half mile away from the campus and some other bullshite.

I don't care about the AAU part and apparently Aggies do but let us get back to the non-academic/ football/fan/relevant to sports portion of it.

If that's the case, how come only ring holders are listed in the AFS database?

I mean secondary in the sense that A&M is not historically the first-choice football school in Texas. You're overshadowed by your rival, they have more fans than you, and that leads to your distaste for tshirt fans.
