Unlike most of the SEC towns, Knoxville is a real city and on a major national highway. That is a help to recruiting some.

So is Columbia, Nashville, and Baton Rouge. Tuscaloosa is right down the road from Birmingham.

I haven't been to every SEC town, but I can tell you with full authority that I would rather live in and go to school in any one of them over Knoxville. Even Starkville.

And I know you tried really hard on the rest of your post, but that doesn't change the fact that in the real modern world Tennessee has terrible colors, is not competitive in any rivalry series, and is the most irrelevant Big 6 school.

Personally, I think Tennessee should stick with Butch. Perfect fit, and very beneficial to the rest of the SEC.

Nashville is certainly a nice town.

All those others are inconvenient for traveling to much of the country. Knoxville is much closer to lots of potential recruits than BR is, and the same for the other cities you name.

Oddly enough I was talking to a Bammer fan and co-worker this very day and he said how pathetic a place Starkville is.

Your opinion of the colors is your opinion. Two of the most successful college programs over time have Orange and White for colors - Tennessee and Texas.

Any other top ten teams have matching colors?

We have had a down decade but UT is still a great football school.

And we have the best football venue in the world.

Actually, we can easily afford the buyout. It would be a mistake to fire Lyle after consecutive 9 win seasons tho. If we had given him an extension last year, we'd be fricked. But if we go 6-6 or worse, we can fire him and the job is much more appealing.
Exactly - gotta give him at least 2 more years to see where his trend is going.

That's not really what I meant. I think he's reached his ceiling, But what coach could we get after firing a coach who just had consecutive 9 win seasons? It wouldn't be an attractive job.

If he chalks up two more 9 win seasons with bowl wins in each of them then folks could somewhat understand it if UT decided to look elsewhere for a coach to get y'all over the hump.

Butch was hired at the same time Bert & Gus were hired. I bet if both AU & Arky were sitting on 9 back to back 9 win seasons with back to back bowl wins they would be pretty happy right now.

While I don't think it is a major factor in recruiting...Knoxville is actually the intersection of 2 Interstates. You could even say 3...I-81 merges with I-40 just prior to passing through Knoxville. I-75 and I-40 converge in Knoxville.

When it comes to interstates traveling through SEC Cities:

- Knoxville (2)- I-75, I-40 (I-81 merges into I-40 just East of town
- Nashville - I-65, I-24, I-40
- Athens - None (I-85 and I-20 pass close-by)
- Gainesville (1) - I-75
- Columbia, SC (3) - I-20, I-26, I-77
- Columbia, MO (1) - I-70
- Lexington (2) - I-64, I-75
- Oxford (none) - (I-55, and I-22 pass close-by)
- Starkville (none)- nothing nearby
- Baton Rouge (2) - I-10, I-12 terminates in BR
- Fayetteville (1) - I-49
- College Station (none) - nothing nearby
- Auburn (1) - I-85
- Tuscaloosa (1) - I-20 and I-59 run together in Birmingham and Meridian

Gus has won an SEC title, competed for a national title and has beaten Bama once.

If Butch had Bert's personality, he'd at least be tolerable.

Tennessee can't afford to get rid of Butch. Remember...UT is poor.

You made a good point before. If Lyle screws the pooch to the tune of 5-7 or 6-6 and THEN gets fired, the UT job would still be attractive to good coaches.

"No. 1 Tennessee: $107.1 million
Not only are the Volunteers the Champions of Life, but the clear football revenue winners based on the most recent data. Tennessee had both the most revenue ($107.1 million) and most profits ($78.9 million) of all 14 SEC football programs. It is a credit to the program’s large and loyal fanbase that packs out Neyland Stadium each week even when the product on the field isn’t always great."

Yeah, but a cat fell in the butter churn.

Look at Bammer:

"No. 2 Alabama: $103.87 million
Alabama fell off its perch as the most lucrative football program in the SEC even though this data is based off its 2015 national championship run. Surprisingly, the Crimson Tide had only the sixth-biggest profit ($47.6 million) though it’s worth noting that schools use different methods in determining profits for the filings."

Bammer is spending money to win football games, since that is the only draw for entertainment in the state. UT isn't nearly so canny about putting a winning product on the field.
