Do you even remember the '99 season?
Do I even remember it? It was the only good Alabama football memories I had between Kitchens to Riddle as an 11 year old in 1996 and the reckoning of 2008.
I didn't say it wasn't improbable, or even downright weird, but if strip away the moron, scandal plagued coach and just look at the statistics that team wasn't any luckier to win a title than a bunch of other SEC teams. Luck is going 5-3 and backing into the title game only to win it. That team recovered from the LTU game and ran the table outside of Tennessee. They were a worthy champ, thanks to Shaun Alexander and Chris Samuels. Greatest player-coach jobs of all time.

Being honest, Tennessee has everything Alabama has. They just continued to hire terrible coaches for a long time. Even Fulmer was average. He's an SEC version of Mack Brown. Squandered a ton of talent. Amazing that Tennessee only has 5 SEC titles since 1970. And none since 1998.
Fulmer only compares to Brown near the end. What sucked for us is the 70s were our other lost era (before Johnny came marching home) and then we unleashed in the 90s and early 00s, Florida had teams where there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two. Had UT and Florida been in separate divisions during that time frame it would've been a whole different story but back then the SEC was decided in September.

I'm not pretending or acting like it didn't happen, but even during that abysmal stretch Bama still won an SEC Championship and hasn't went 17 years without an SEC title since the 1950's if ever.
And I remember the bad years. I made it a point of attending every game during the Dubose/Shula years just to support the players.

I would actually argue that Tennessee is really taking off in terms of football talent. Particularly the Nashville area. Regardless, Alabama isn't dependent on in-state talent either. A 500 mile radius around either campus is very similar in terms of talent.
Not at all. Mobile itself produces more than tennessee. This has always been an issue at UT. Memphis has had some but not anywhere close to B'ham, Montgomery and Mobile.

Let's not act like 1997-2006 didn't happen. Had Dubose not lucked into a SEC title in 1999, Alabama would have went 17 years being conference titles.
Point taken but let's not act like there weren't mitigating circumstances. The NCAA went of a THREE YEAR probe that severely hampered recruiting and then nailed us for almost 30 schollies which killed us off for 5 or 6 AFTER they were done with the investigation.
Remember this too, If we aren't being investigated after the DuBose era we name Butch Davis coach in 2000. The ONLY reason he didn't take the job was the looming sanctions. We never hire Shula or quite frankly, Franchione either if we are sanction free.
In short, Bama does not sink to the levels we sunk to if not for probation.
