Teams that have played in the most "Big Games"

Going all the way back to 1950, here are the number of occasions in which programs have participated in a "Top 10 Matchup".... being in the Top 10, and playing another Top 10 opponent:
1. Oklahoma- 87
2. Alabama- 76
3. Ohio State- 74
4. Notre Dame- 70
5. Nebraska- 68
6. Texas- 63
7. USC- 61
8. Florida- 58
9. Florida St.- 57
10. Michigan- 55
11. Tennessee- 51
12. Miami- 49
13. LSU- 44
14. Penn State- 41
15. Auburn- 40
16. Arkansas- 36
17. UCLA- 29
18. Georgia- 29
19. Colorado- 28
20. Michigan State- 27
Those were the only programs with at least 25 such games played since 1950. FYI, Ole Miss has played 17... Texas A&M 15... Missouri 8... South Carolina 8... all other SEC teams are less than 5 each.
So which programs (minimum 25 games) historically perform the best in "Big Games" ? Shockingly, the winner was Michigan State... granted they've played in the fewest number of these games.
Best "Big Game" Programs by winning percentage in "Top 10 Matchups":
1. Michigan State (75.9%)
2. USC (66.4%)
3. Miami (65.3%)
4. Alabama (65.1%)
5. Florida State (58.8%)
6. Oklahoma (58.6%)
7. Texas (56.4%)
8. Auburn (55.0%)
8. Notre Dame (55.0%)
10. Florida (54.3%)
11. Ohio State (52.0%0
12. Colorado (51.8%)
13. Penn State (51.2%)
14. LSU (51.1%)
15. Nebraska (49.3%)
16. Michigan (45.6%)
17. UCLA (43.1%)
18. Tennessee (42.2%)
19. Georgia (41.4%)
20. Arkansas (26.4%)
It's depressing to see on paper how bad my Dawgs have performed in "Big Games" over the years.... though its not all that surprising to be honest. That always seems to be Georgia's problem. We win all the games we are supposed to win, but struggle winning those big games that are often the difference between a good season and a great season.
Other thoughts:
*How horrible is Arkansas in big games? At the bottom and its not even close. The Hogs are 9-26-1 in Top 10 matchups going back to 1950. That's horrendous!
*College football is missing Colorado these days. They were a solid program for years, culminating in their 1990 National Title. It's amazing to me that they've played in 28 "Big Games" since 1950, all while not sniffing the Top 10 themselves since the preseason poll of 2002. They've essentially fallen off the deep end. As bad as its been for Tennessee since 2002, the Vols' situation looks amazing compared to Colorado. I wonder if they'll ever come back.
*Doesn't shock me at all to see USC and Miami at the very top (not counting Michigan State). When those programs are playing at the top of their game, there is just a swagger about them, and a feeling that they simply don't lose the big games... even more so than Alabama when they are at the top of their game. Though Bama right behind at #3 is also not surprising.

And ut has lost every single one of them over the past nine years

I can't understand why it's become difficult to recruit kids to go to Boulder.
I'd love to live there.

When was the last time Tennessee was in the top 10?

Good point, I should probably lay off the acid so early on the day

Do this since 2000
All we LSU fans care about since good teams weren't as plentiful before then.

No, by all means, drop some more.

Can you go back to 1936 when the AP poll started?

That's a great post with some cool stats

06. They were #8 on 11/4 before losing to LSU.

Ahh yes the first game I attended at Neyland. I clearly remember a Johnathon Crompton bomb to the endzone and Jamarcus Russel running down the sideline en route to a game winning drive.
That game was incredible and the crowd was extremely loud.

If you're given offers to go somewhere with more exposure, you'd be hard pressed to go there, I'd imagine. This is assuming you're thinking NFL

Actually this is only counting the games in which Tennessee would also be ranked in the Top 10 at the time of the game... so unless UT has cracked the Top 10 since 2007 (which I don't think they have), none of those last 24 losses to Top 10 teams are counted.

To be 2nd in # and 4th in % is pretty salty!

I can see why you'd want to view it since just 2000:
Most "Big Games" played since 2000 (Top 10 vs. Top 10):
1. Alabama- 26
1. LSU- 26
3. Florida- 22
3. Ohio State- 22
5. Oklahoma- 21
6. Oregon- 18
7. Florida State- 17
8. USC- 16
9. Miami- 15
10. Auburn- 14
11. Texas- 13
12. Georgia- 11
13. Virginia Tech- 10
14. Notre Dame- 9
15. Michigan State- 8
15. Clemson- 8
17. Tennessee- 7
18. Arkansas- 6
18. Oklahoma State- 6
18. Stanford- 6
18. TCU- 6
Out of these 22 teams who've played in at least 6 of these "Big Games" since 2000, here is how they rank by winning percentage:
1. USC- 81.3%
2. Michigan State- 75.0%
3. Alabama- 73.1%
4. Auburn- 71.4%
5. Miami- 66.7%
5. TCU- 66.7%
7. Florida- 63.6%
8. Oklahoma- 61.9%
9. Oregon- 61.1%
10. Ohio State- 54.5%
11. LSU- 53.8%
12. Florida State- 47.1%
13. Texas- 46.2%
14. Clemson- 37.5%
15. Georgia- 36.4%
16. Stanford- 33.3%
16. Oklahoma State- 33.3%
18. Tennessee- 28.6%
19. Virginia Tech- 20.0%
20. Arkansas- 16.7%
21. Notre Dame- 11.1%
22. Kansas State- 0.0%
Notre Dame football just can't win the big games these days.... they are just 1-8 in "Big Games" since 2000. That's unreal. Even Arkansas at 1-5 has a better percentage!
Once again, USC is at the top in terms of winning percentage. When they are on, they are on.

While LSU has played in as many "Big Games" since 2000 as any program, your winning percentage is not too great.
LSU is 14-12 in "Big Games" since 2000... which isn't bad. But obviously Bama's 19-7 record tops LSU by quite a bit. Of course I can't say much, Georgia's 4-7 record is once again depressing.
Auburn with a 71% winning percentage in big games surprised me... though when you think about it, it shouldn't be all that surprising. When Auburn is good, they usually rise to the task and perform well in big games. Their issue is they can't maintain consistency. One year they go undefeated... the next they are fighting to make a bowl game: That's the story of Auburn football.

Yet some rantards claim aTm has more history than Arkansas. Arkansas is closer to the big 6 than any other program in the SEC and it's not close

True. Ark. A&M and Ole Miss are the only ones near the big 6 historically. The rest are waaay back.
