my generation down here has a lot of favorite teams besides the saints. usually cowboys, 49ers or redskins, but the generations before and after seem to have more saints fans.

That actually makes a lot of sense if you stop and think about it

Too young to remember the '79 Cowboys season (I was born in '88), but my Dad certainly does, and my childhood was dotted with Dallas Super Bowl teams.

Started rooting for the Texans because of my wife and JJ Watt

Went to the DAL/STL game in MO last year with the 'Boys came back to win from down 21-0. One of the best NFL games I've ever attended

yeah, it was new for my dads generation, then just bad for most of mine and pretty good for the generation after.

i think this might be our year, and that st.louis game was the defining game of our season last year.

too short, digital underground (freaks of the industry, etc) and the ghetto boys where prolly the most popular when i was in high school.

i'll always have some love for lsu and the saints.

Aggies have the most small dick syndrome I've ever seen! They're always getting over on someone or is better than someone! The little dick syndrome runs deep through college station!!!!

Got it. You've got one anonymous scout and one verified confrontation with a GA, but you have no idea if it was "without repercussions," as you said.

In other words, you don't know shite. But it makes you feel good to think that Sumlin "needs to handle his own program."

i'm a big cowboys fan. my dad was a minister so getting steered toward tom landry was kind of a no-brainer.

It's a shame that some younger people don't even realize the genius that Tom Landry was. He was the inventor of the 4-3 defense. He was the only head coach ever to be his team's own offensive & defensive coordinator. Landry was also the one who took a seldom used formation, modified it & gave us what we now know as the shotgun formation.

Before he was head coach of the Cowboys though, he was the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. The Giants offensive coordinator back then was some guy named Vince Lombardi. Can you imagine the intensity at those practices when they went one's vs one's?

Not only was Landry an X's & O's genius but both he & Cowboys Scout, Gil Brandt created the system that many teams still use today in the scouting & drafting process. No did it better than the Steelers & the Cowboys in those days. Both organizations set the example for the rest of the league to use.

Young bucks these days only know Landry for his iconic fedora

He was so much more than that to the game.

did you see the dallas oline do the old landry reset at the end of a game last year? was pretty awesome.

that's something else he did to hide (or act like he was hiding) motion.

i used to coach d2 ball (played it too) and i was in dallas for week doing some recruiting back in 08 and i drove out to the cemetery where mickey mantle and tom landry are laid to rest.

mantle is in this huge fancy sarcophagus and landry is buried in a non descript grave outside with a small headstone and a barely visible footstone. i spent about an hour just sittin at the foot of his grave thinking about all he had done for the game of football and the great man he was in life.

damn bro, you just sent my arse down memory lane talkin about all that.

Seriously, how much football do you actually follow? Do you even realize scouts are openly invited to on campuses across the nation to view practices, right? You do you realize NFL scouts will go back as far as middle school to look into a players character, right? Do you believe a Heisman winning QB who put up the numbers in college fell to the back half of the 1st round for no reason? Why didn't Mariota have a similar type slide this past draft? Yeah, those anonymous scouts know nothing, right?

Outside of Manziel's minor suspension for the autograph incident, please tell me when has benched at any other time in his career? Even Kenny Hill was suspended drunken deeds. Show me where Manziel was disciplined for putting his hands on that GA? I don't know if you ever played any type of sports yourself but what Manziel did is a huge no-no which usually lands a player in scalding hot water with the staff.

Dude, you've got issues. A scout has no fricking clue whether or not he's been going to film sessions. According to all his teammates at A&M, Manziel worked hard during his time at A&M. As for the punishment, sitting out games is not the only form of punishment. For example, Jennings and 4 of his teammates were recently arrested. Just because they're not suspended does not mean they weren't punished.

I'll let you in on a secret. Landry was actually before my time but since I was a kid, I was always fascinated by the history of the game. If you were to ask the average fan who were Don Hutson, Lance "Bambi" Alworth or Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik, they honestly wouldn't even know. Or the time Bednarik almost killed Frank Gifford.

Ask them who holds the NFL record for passing yards in a game, they would probably say Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

They probably have never heard of the Eagles Norm Van Brocklin & his 554 yards in 1951.

Warren Moon should have broken the record in a game with the Oilers but Jack Pardee pulled him without realizing how close Moon was to the record.

speaking of all time passing yards. what if moon never played in the cfl.

what's up with y.a. tittle from north texas. arguably the best qb lsu had until russell, certainly the best pro lsu has ever produced.

i was a football junkie growing up. it was cool to watch parcells' 34 defense and walsh's west coast offense in the 80s.

If a player has character issues, teams have plenty of opportunities to find them out before the NFL draft.

The process begins in the fall, before the draft, when scouts attend campuses and speak privately with coaches about players.

quote:

“They might tell you some trouble [the players] have had with the law, and some other places they’re going to be tight-lipped,” said NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, formerly a scout with the Ravens, Eagles, and Browns.

But scouts are employed to make football decisions. Most teams also have their own security department, consisting of former police officers and detectives, who do full background checks on every player on a team’s draft board.

“I’m talking about parking tickets, everything,” Jeremiah said. “And if there were some issues where you had major concerns, you take it to the next step.”
