No other media outlets criticize him and does not take it to heart. His problem is directly related to the fact it is TheState.com located in Colombia, SC. Morris slanders Spurrier's integrity and that of the University. He has every right to blacklist him and comment he wants him fired.
Spurrier does not have a problem with media who criticize or second guess him. Plenty of reporters criticized him for not running Lattimore on short yardage and goal against Mizzou and Kentucky. Same with his handling of Stephen Garcia, retaining ineffective assistant coaches, or anything else about the program.
His problem with Morris are the baseless personal attacks. Steve Spurrier cares about honor and integrity. He is famously candid about his team. He has always run an extremely clean program -- both at UF and at USC -- and expects others to meet the same standard.
Morris crosses a line other writers do not (remember, Morris is not a reporter; he's a columnist). The real issue is not Spurrier; it's Ron Morris and his lack of integrity.

So as a columnist, and not a reporter, it would seem that he's been hired to voice his opinions. Why is Spurrier allowed to decide which ones are voiced?

Spurrier doesn't have the authority to fire Morris. Morris is employed by The State; not USC.
Spurrier is allowed to defend himself against baseless attacks -- attacks which not only have no basis in fact, but are deliberately calculated to impugn Spurrier's reputation. Spurrier put up with Morris's critiques for years. You have to understand it's not about mere criticism -- it's about Morris falsely accusing Spurrier of poaching another USC coach's players and deliberately risking a player injury just to win a football game over UAB.
Spurrier has a right to defend himself. Spurrier kept quiet -- until Morris went on national radio and equated Spurrier's refusal to answer his questions to Joe Paterno covering up child rape. At that point, Spurrier spoke out on his radio show and explained that he would not -- and did not have to -- endure baseless personal attacks on his integrity. He pointed out that in his many years of coaching, no other writer had ever so blithely made up this kind of accusation.
Remember that Spurrier is bound by SEC rules to talk to journalists -- just as he is constrained from criticizing referees. His only option was to go public.
The athletic director -- former baseball coach Ray Tanner -- tried to mediate with The State newspaper, to no avail. If you know anything about college baseball, you know Tanner is an honest, straight up, and judicious man. Neither he nor Spurrier are going to throw their weight around to get someone fired. But they will act to protect their University and their persons from false accusations.
Frankly, Morris should be fired. "Journalists" who make shite up are bad for society. The management at The State hangs on to him for their own reasons. Perhaps they think he sells newspapers; perhaps they are standing up for journalistic independence; perhaps this is part of their long-standing grudge against the University.

I don't care who you are, but if you have a "reporter" who spews blatant lies in your local paper that recruits read, it is not only taking a shot at Spurrier personally, but also at his job. SOS has every right to stand up for himself and retaliate against such baseless BS. Gamecocks as a whole are basically unified on this matter which says something. This has been Morris game for years and finally it looks like its about to be game over for this dipshit.
The internet is a great place for hacks like Morris to blatantly lie about stuff going on. The fact that he does so for the local paper as the Gamecock beat reporter is so pathetic, that it warrants his termination.

Except for $50,000 worth of illegal benefits y'all got nailed for? Morris will have some fun Sunday morning.

He is not deciding but when you piss off someone of power, you need to be ready for backlash.

Congrats on not knowing what you're talking about. Spurrier didn't allow for those benefits. And he suspended all players for the appropriate amount of games and didn't even let the starting TE return to the team.

Spurrier is always running his big mouth. Most arrogant coach in the SEC.

Spurrier is a bitch. He wants to run his mouth but cry like a 5 year old girl when someone criticizes him. No strength of character at all, just a little bitch.

Because he compared Spurrier to a guy who covered up child rape. It doesn't matter what he was trying to say. That's what he actually said.
Come on man, the guy never mentioned child rape. He mentioned a coach trying to overextend his scope and power. He was referring to one of the peripheral lessons (one of a million) that we learned as a result of the Penn State story.
It's a little shortsighted and immature to assume every lesson we learned from Penn State must have a child pedophilia exemption from being applied. There's a lot we learned from Penn State.
ETA: And I'm a Spurrier fan. Always have been. But I'd feel like a rented date right now especially from the "Take the North Carolina job" comment if I was a USCe fan.

Two things you can't compare anything to...(1) Penn St. and (2) Nazis.

Have you missed Saban berating the press because he didn't like what they had to say?

Bama fans still mad about Spurrier's 3-1 record vs Saban?

The reporter never compared ANYBODY to Sandusky or any other child molester. He made a VERY LEGITIMATE point that a sports culture which does not allow the head coach to be challenged by anyone is what led to the travesty at Penn State. The point was clear and easily understood by anyone willing to pause for three seconds and not blindly react to the words "Penn State".

Wait, this being posted by a bama fan is definitely a joke right?

Imagine what saban could be getting away with at bama then. The level of coach worship in Tuscaloosa is 10x the level of anywhere else in the country, including Happy Valley which is saying a lot. Throw in an insane control freak and it's the perfect storm.

Spurrier is coming across as trivial but he is simply doing what Donald Trump writes in every book:
"When somebody challenges you, fight back. Be brutal, be tough."
Trump is a firm believer in revenge. Even if it is a waste of time and too petty to worry about, Trump always teaches others to get revenge because it will pay off in the end when little to no one will dare try to cross you because they know what will happen.
Coaches lose their jobs because of the media all the time so it should come as no shock to a local writer that if he compares the local hero to a molestation scandal leader, he might lose his job. And I bet no one else at the local paper will ever frick with Spurrier again. Sports journalists tend to forget that they cover a game, not real life. This is not the investigative journalism needed to preserve the republic.
