I believe he can. If he can just get our guys into position, the front 7 is talented enough to keep us in every game.

I'm no expert, but I think the Super Awesome DC days are over. Great DCs who were dominant just a few years ago are having to account for the pace and change of offensive styles in the game. If your own offense is fast paced like that, your Defense is going to be on the field a significantly larger amount of time than they were a few years ago. Muschamp will make the AU Defense better, but the 2004 days are OVER.. for everyone.

Yep. DL is vastly upgraded with having Lawson back. LB is upgraded by developing last year's starters. CB is an obvious upgrade (Countess by default has to be better than Mincy ). Tray Matthews should be a decent upgrade at Safety as well if he can stay healthy.

That's what I really meant when I said Muschamp is a tad overrated. Saban and Smart both are as well in that sense. I get the sense from some AU posters that AU's D is going to be as good as Muschamp's were back in the BOOM days, but that's just not going to happen. He's obviously still a great coach, and an upgrade over Johnson, but he really hasn't had an outstanding defense since Texas in 09. His last couple of years at Texas were pretty bad.

JJ is arguably better than NM. They'll definitely throw it more which only helps the run game. Speaking of run game, they have an underrated 3-headed monster in Roc, Jovon Robinson and Barber which will shred this year. Their defense should improve, too.

Dangerous team.

TOP is the same, but how many more plays/series are they running? That is more times your Defense has to take the field.

ETA: You mean that one season, 2010? Where he finished #5 in total defense? Same as his finish in 2009? Then those 4 years at Florida where he finished 9, 6, 5, and 4?

Fair enough, but total time on the field is almost the same.

Looking at the numbers:
Auburn 2004 total offensive plays: 861 OPP: 780
Auburn 2013 total offensive plays: 1014 OPP: 989

That said, our defense being monstrous in 2004 obviously had something to do with that. Force 3 and outs, less plays from the OPP, for instance.

The point I'm getting at is that you can't definitively say the days of good DC's are over because of fast paced offenses. Look at Clemson, for example.

Muschamp's defenses have been top tier every place he's been.

That's fair. I still think there are good DCs, but the glory days of stingy SEC defenses are waning thin. And that 2004 defense was the FASTEST I've seen. What did they give up like 4 rushing TDs all season? it was ridiculous.

Mostly due to the Jeremy Johnson hype and the hiring of Muschamp as DC. The SECW doesn't have many returning starting Qbs and JJ played last year and looked pretty good. Gus is known as a great offensive mind and the thought process is that Au's offense will be very good again and that the defense will be improved. They get both UGA and Bama at home and the 2013 miracles are still fresh in minds of the polsters. So it's a combination of uncertainty of their competitors at keys position at Qb and the addition of Muschamp

I don't think most reasonable AU poster feel that we are suddenly going to be a Top 25 defense. What is most exciting to us is a Top 10 or 20 offense combined with a defense that does not give up over 31 ppg against P5 schools, which is what we averaged last year. Even shaving that down to around 26 PPG and middle of the pack in the SEC, that's 50 points for the year. That makes a bigger difference than most people think. I think the defensive attitude and aggression will be vastly different, for the better, and that is half the battle.

Of course that was last year, but if anyone can show me a recent example of a team on that type of losing streak ranked this highly I'd love to see it.

10/12 vs. *Missouri L 26 41
10/19 @ *Vanderbilt L 27 31
11/2 vs. *Florida W 23 20
11/16 @ *Auburn L 38 43
11/23 vs. *Kentucky W 59 17
11/30 @ Georgia Tech W 41 34
1/1 vs. Nebraska L 19 24

Finished 8-5.

Ranked #8 in USA Today preseason poll the following year.

Well I think we may be a bit overrated as well but our starting QB will not be named Brandon Harris or Anthony Jennings so we do have hope.

Every single time we scored last year we knew automatically that that would not be enough. And 2 minutes later, the opposing team was in their own end zone to match us. They ran right through us with ease. It was utterly frustrating. And we scored a lot last year. Offense was never our problem. Now let's see what Muschamp can do this year. Auburn can be a very dangerous team this year (and not saying that because this is my team)...but we'll see.
