It's generally better to ignore most follow up comments in these threads, but I would never want Meyer as a coach, even if he had a record against Miles like Saban has.

Not trading him for anyone at LSU. Im not saying he's the best in the business, but it certainly doesnt take long to call roll. He speaks an alien language that makes him come across as Elmer Fudd, but when u watch his actions only; you see just how intelligent he is.
Some still point to time mgt issues. Which was real like 5-6 years ago. If anyone would care to look around the league they would see other teams having these issues annually.

Here's the thing with Les, he is getting better every year; which is pretty remarkable.
He is one tough SOB is all I can say. He never sweats no matter what. Katrina, NFL defections, Nick Saban coming to the neighborhood, (see urban meyer, he almost died over this and did retire) Les just rolls along with a whistle in his step. His skin has to be an inch thick.

How good is Les?

1. Graduation-- A
2. Wins--------A
3. Sanctions--- B+
4. NFL Pipeline---A

Watch Bama in a rebuilding year with question marks at quarterback. 5 losses? Not gonna happen.

Check out that Bama record from 1997-2007 and get back with us.

LSU has underachieved. Louisiana produces more NFL talent per-capita than any other state. Also consider they don't compete with other in-state schools for talent, unlike Alabama. They have the best recruiting situation of any school, but don't have the results to show for it.

This is the type of bullshite rivals and even our own fan believe. Where were all the recruits in late 80s and 90s? Going to other schools because LSU does not recruit it's self, coaches do. Saban started and Les has maintained it. Those Florida State and Miami teams in the 80s and 90s were loaded with La players.

LSU may not have an instate rival but all the other schools from across the country set up camp here to get the La kids.

Actually, Gerry started the recruiting.

A lot of the lsu fans on here that see him the most seem to think pretty highly of him, which makes me question my own opinion of him from the outside looking in.

I really think that Les Miles is the biggest reason we are 4-4 against lsu during the same period we've been 0-8 against bama.

As the previous poster mentioned, no one has a better recruiting situation than Miles yet he loses a lot of top tier in state talent. Miles lost more 4 star talent in one parish in 2014 than Arkansas has lost in the entire State in three recruiting classes.

He's not a polished public speaker.

He's the owner of the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen a HC at a major program do in a press conference before a game which was to intentionally mis-pronounce the name of the state he was getting ready to play. This was the biggest reason for his team's defeat in that game, creating the asterisk next to the only national champion with two losses. (in the modern era)

This. Gerry started the domino effect of keeping the majority of the in state players, in state. He doesn't get enough credit for building the foundation that led to the turn around of the football program. All 3 of the last LSU head coaches deserve credit in their own right for getting the program where it currently is.

He reminds me a lot of Tommy Tuberville except he's an exceptional recruiter and normally when he takes gambles, they work out in his favor.

That being said, he has been known to go full retard on occasion. I'd take him over every other coach in the SEC with the exceptions of Saban and Spurrier.

Yes he did, but not to the level of Saban and Miles.

You really should have stopped after this. The rest of your post invalidates your opinion.

I'll dissect:

There was probably more 4 and 5 star talent in that one parish in that one year than there has been across all of Arkansas for the last 3 years.

True but without the foundation Dinardo laid down prior, Saban would have walked into a situation worse than he actually did which would have delayed the eventual success he ended up having. It all intertwines together.

I think this is overstated. I know lately we've had early NFL defections to blame, but I don't think Miles is an excellent manager of the roster.

Look at our current QB or linebacker depth, for example.

Ohio State, Alabama, USCw and Texas have the best recruiting situation and its not even close.

Teams like the Florida schools, Michigan, Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, A&M, Wisconsin, Mich St, Oregon and a few others rent this space from time to time. But only when they have a legendary coach or their rivals are having tough times. When both occur, u can make a little 3-4 yr run.

At the Big 4, you can win a title when neither of these occur.

Thats why when Jimmy Johnson was asked which is easier: winning the Super Bowl or the Nat'l Title. He said it depends on what school your at.

yet another similarity to Mizzou, where Larry Smith started the resurgence of in state recruiting before Pinkel.

One of those recruits, Justin Smith, will be coming home!

Justin Smith to help out the Mizzou staff..

and

Barry Odom, one of Larrys guys, coming home(again) to take over at DC...

Well quarterback recruiting has never been his strong point, I agree. And you had one of your linebackers transfer out this offseason so I can't really put that on him too much. Y'all are deep and talented at every other position though.

The truth is we have had some lazy recruiters on the staff hidden amongst the good ones. Stud, Chavis & Haley didn't pull their weight & it caused us to lose out on several high profiled recruits over the years at those positions. Just look at how neglected NELA has been from a recruiting standpoint over the last few years. That's the reason the current staff is making a conceded effort to make that area of the state a top priority.

quote:

When LSU realized its annual summer Tiger Tour wasn't making a stop in Monroe this year, a group of assistants decided to do something about it.

LSU recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson and assistant coaches Ed Orgeron, Steve Ensminger and Bradley Dale Peveto were all in Monroe Tuesday as part of the 2015 LSU Football Coaches Caravan, a speaking engagement similar to the Tiger Tour.

The Tiger staff spoke to an audience that included alums and some of the area's top high school football coaches at the newly remodeled Bayou Landing on DeSiard Street.

"Today is the first day we can be out recruiting and we're here," Wilson said. "This area is important to us and we wanted to make a resounding statement.

"We're here to claim Monroe and this area as part of LSU country and it's our job to recruit this area better than any school in the United States."

The fact the LSU contingent spent the first day of the recruiting calendar in North Louisiana, and specifically Ouachita Parish, was a common refrain throughout the day.

Those were just the two easiest examples, but we've had a lot of roster holes over the years.

And QB, I think he's actually recruited well, there's just been no development. I don't know how much you can blame Miles for that, between Jimbo and Cameron, we've had guys like Crowton and Studrawa coaching QB's.

If WVU beats Pitt, Miles would have likely been fired by now.

This could be true, however if we're going to play hypotheticals, there's a solid chance that if OSU beats Iowa St. in 2011 that Les would have the same number of titles at LSU that Saban does at Bama. And had that 2011 team gotten to play OSU in the title game, they would be considered possibly the GOAT. That team beat the rose bowl champs, the Orange bowl champs en route to a perfect season. Saban flexed his muscles in the rematch and has ever since, but if Bama doesn't get that opportunity, who knows where we'd be sitting today. Les is really equally as close to being unemployed as he is to being Sabans equal.

100% true.

Wilson didn't have a whole lot of support going after recruits on the defensive side.
