6. Santonio Beard 8.22 2001 Alabama

One of the most underrated backs this century. It's a shame he quit the team after Fran left. I believe he also got into drugs and was arrested for possession 7-8 years back.

Either way...the three-headed beast of Santonio Beard, Shaud Williams, and Ray Hudson might have been the best backfield in the conference in 2003 had he stayed with the team.

surprised not to see Sean Alexander

Shaun Alexander wasn't fully utilized until his junior season (1998). He was the back up to Dennis Riddle and Curtis Alexander for the first half of his career. And that includes the LSU game in his freshman year where he rushed for 291 yards.

Also...starting in '98, Alabama went away from the power run that had been a staple of the offense since 1990. DuBose figured that by modeling his offense somewhat after Spurrier's Fun 'N Gun that he would get better recruits. He bet correctly...it's just a shame he was such a crappy head coach.

Most shocking thing to me in these lists are the fact that with as explosive as Herschel Walker was, he is no where to be found on the lists for AVG/Attempt in career or AVG/Carry in a season.

Most of the top of the AVG/Carry list should be thrown out due to being situational players and not workhorses. Harvin only had 83 carries, McCalebb only had 95, Lorino only had 82, Beard only had 77, Jackson (UA) only had 95.

The only players on that list at the top with over 100 carries in the season are:

Felix Jones (133)
Brent Fullwood (167)
Bo Jackson (158)

He carried the ball more than anyone else on the list. He played in 33 games, had 994 carries. An average of 30 carries per game for 3 straight years. He was a warhorse..literally carrying that entire team to 3 straight sec titles and 3 straight nc games

The older records are even more impressive considering they were done in 11 games, and today guys get like 13-14 regularly

You could argue it's harder these days with the offenses being pass happy
