It really isn't that baffling though, I mean it is, but it's easier now than it's ever been. Realistically, there are only a few schools who can compete, arguably only one that he plays on an annual basis. At one time recruiting wasn't as streamlined, all the best players weren't identified nationally and funneled to a few programs. Obviously, in the era of internet communication, there are fewer and fewer unknowns every year. Due to this the competitiveness of CFB has and will continue to shrink. Because the gap of incoming talent is only widening.

I am not trying to discredit what Saban has done, it is impressive. However, doing it when Bear did it, when Holtz did it, when Dooley did it, was exponentially more difficult, because everyone had relatively good athletes. Not to mention athletes were significantly less likely to move away from home, a majority of them elected to stay and play in state.

Only after Saban handled Coach Meyer resulting in a heart attack that caused him to run from the conference.

How many NC would he have under the old system ? A system of Bowl tie-ins and Poll Championships. Then compare that to other coaches who won it under the old system. Prior to the BCS, one loss and you were done.
I'm perfectly fine with Coach Bryant as the GOAT.

Best CEO ever! Figured out how to have a coaching staff 3X larger than any in college football, bring former players out of retirement onto the scouting team, and balance their player salary cap.

Serious Discuss: Is Saban the GOAT CFB coach??

Why are you here? All you do is post about a "fake sport". Yet here you are wasting your time commenting in threads about a fake sport on a college football message board.

I still say not yet. He needs to eclipse bear in national titles and he also needs more career victories

Is it the same 3% that want to move to the SEC East? OR Is it the 3% that want LSU to leave the conference altogether because of mean old Bama?

Greatest of all time? I'm not sure. Guys like Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Bud Wilkinson, John McKay...they stayed at a program for so long and sustained success. Saban has jumped around, so I hold that against him.

Saban has coached at exactly the same number of college teams as Bear.

The only thing Saban has extra are the 2 years he was a coach in the NFL.

Bear started out in Maryland, then went to Kentucky before heading to Texas A&M. Obviously he finished his career at Alabama.

Saban started out with Toledo, then Michigan St before taking the LSU job. He is now finishing his career at Alabama(it would seem).

It's just a coach taking better offers as they come.

I don't think it is a waste of time. Actually it is pretty entertaining knowing that i am getting your goats. That is how I know that you know the truth about your sport. But your fans will never admit to it.

I'd say yes. Bear might have more titles, but Saban did it in a far more competitive environment. Saban has to play an SECCG (Bear didn't) and in the last two years has to go through a play-off. That's 15 games in order to be considered the champ. In some of Bear's years all he had to do was play 11 games. In those days, the NC was handed out by the polls BEFORE the bowl games (In at least one season, Bear lost his bowl game after being crowned the NC).

Also Bear had a big recruiting advantage. Bear recruited whoever he wanted and as MANY as he wanted to sit on the bench (to keep from other schools). Can't do that today even if it were legal to do so (kids transfer now).

Don't get me wrong, Saban still has the game rigged in his favor just as Bear did, but I'd say Bear had even more advantages which makes what Saban has done more impressive.

And I am sure I am leaving out other coaches that deserve mention, but I can't think of any off the top of my head who has as many titles.
