I thought he was in charge of their recreation department under which all of their varsity sports also fall? Admittedly my wake/anchor is not the strongest.
Here's the link to what DWII does there.

Vandy might have a director but not a department, they got rid of the department earlier this century and bought athletics under student life I think

I think Mal Moore did a great job at Alabama for a long time, he will be missed.
Bama football is great because of Nick Saban, not Mal Moore. And Saban wasn't hired due to the persuasive skills of Mal Moore. He was hired because the big-money men in the Bama program made it so.
Bama gymnastics was great before Moore got there.
What other sports is Bama great at again? I mean, RIP Mr. Moore... seemed like a nice enough guy to me, but what made him a great AD?

You're only as good as your results and your facilities. The facilities are good and over one half of their athletic department is relevant to their respective sports. Now if the successor can just make their men competitive in another sport.

Not arguing if they have an athletic department or not. This was a thread about AD's. I like David Williams who is the AD for Vanderbilt.

I would say Florida, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, A&M and Arkansas have top AD's right now.
What have you seen from SC's new AD?

a nice subtle jab at LSU. Joe Alleva has done a fantastic job since his arrival. He is 100x more proven than Ray Tanner, and Long hasn't accomplished anymore than Alleva at this point either. Both have made great hires and both schools have raised a lot of money as of late.

I would put LSU on there as well but it seems around here that I would get slaughtered for that opinion so I left them off.
I also forgot that Hyman went to A&M which makes my opinion terrible obviously.

Hyman gets to prove how good of an AD he is next year, when he will likely have to fire and replace the men's basketball, baseball, and softball coaches all at once.

Bama fans were calling for Moore's head for years until he got lucky and hit the lottery with Saban. Moore was a terrible AD if you ask bama fans this question 7 years ago.
He definitely had a rocky start, but he left with all past mistakes forgiven. He spearheaded over $250MM in athletic renovations and hired several good coaches that have one championships. I still think he handled baseball and women's basketball (and men's bball to a lesser extent) poorly, but no one seems to care about those.

I'll just sit back and enjoy this thread.

The information in that link is outdated. Zeppos changed Williams' title to "Vice Chancellor for athletics and university affairs and Athletics Director" last July.
LINK
More than just a title change, his roles as General Counsel and University Secretary were farmed out to others so that he could concentrate additionally on athletics. He retained his status as a tenured professor at the Law School.
Here is a pic of Williams explaining the source of his success...

He hired Chad Holbrook as his replacement as our baseball coach.
He kept Dawn Staley here when OSU came after her offering to make her the highest paid women's basketball coach in the country and inspire of the dirty tactics they tried in their effort to lure her away from here.
He's also been a helluva ambassador for us in the short time since he took over. Very well respected. Signed Spurrier to a sweet contract extension at the end of the season.
Tanner is getting it done.

If Bama's boosters didn't put together a special package for Saban, there's no chance in hell Moore is held in high regard right now.
