Furman was beating us going into the fourth quarter in 2011.

They've had their struggles against mediocre non-conference competition.
You could do that shite for basically any team. You can't really expect us to blow out every single team every game. I mean, we aint Bama. And all that matters is we won those games.

I mean even y'all fricking lost to UL Monroe back in '07. And FSU. Also only beat Houston by 6. In 08 yall had a pretty close game with Tulane and then in 09 yall beat Va.Tech by 10. Obviously Bama has more blowouts than not the past few years but that doesn't mean the rest of the college world isn't gonna have some closer games. Sometimes its tougher to get up for some rather than others. No point in holding that against us.

ULL @ Arkansas

This ULL team will be much better than the ULM team of last year. I'll be picking Arkansas unless the spread is ridiculous but they best not take the Cajuns lightly. They came within an eyelash of beating UF in the Swamp last year.

there are a bunch of credible possibilities IMO

MSU/Ok State seems likely

Auburn/WSU
UGA/Clemson
LSU/TCU

are also possible

I could see USCe, UK, MSU, Bama, UGA and LSU losing week one. Not saying that any of them will , but I could see it happening.

@ Clemson will be a tough game for Georgia. I could see them losing that. They usually have an early season loss to a decent team then pick up steam as the year goes on.

Only problem for them is, this game will come before that game, so they are really screwed...

And South Carolina always seem to struggle and have these weird games against non-conference competiton especially early in the season. They could be prime for an upset.

Well let's take a look:

2012 @Vandy W 17-13
2011 ECU (N) W 56-37
2010 Southern Miss W 41-13
2009 @NC State W 7-3
2008 NC State W 34-0
2007 UL-Lafayette W 28-14
2006 @Miss State W 15-0
2005 UCF W 24-15

Under Spurrier we've won every opening game by an average of almost 16 points. You'd have to go all the way back to 1999 to find our last opening game loss. But I guess perception really is reality, huh?

And we're also 28-3 under Spurrier in regular-season, non-conference games...all 3 losses being to in-state rival Clemson. We'll be bringing an 11-game home win streak versus UNC to start this season, and I know the team will not want for it to end....

We're not going to lose to UNC. It's the first game against the season and its an old rival for the fan base and its a team where a lot of players will know each other due to SC recruiting the hell out of that state. Not to mention its at home. So I'm not worried about us 'sleepwalking' the first game or anything.

However under Spurrier we seem to struggle in the first game, regardless of the opponent, while we figure out the kinks.

Yeah an average of 16 point-victories is good but lets not fool ourselves.

Look at our larger victories..

ECU - down big at half.
NC State - Only up 7-0, or 10-0 late in the 3rd before we pulled away in the 4th.
MSU - Used a trick play in the 3rd or 4th to pull away in that game.
ULL - struggled all game against a vastly inferior opponent.
UCF - got to a big lead vs UCF in the first half, couldn't do anything in the 2nd.

Barely beat @NC State, @Vandy.

Only game we were ever in real control the whole time was USM.

One of these teams in the poll shouldn't be favored to win. Austin Peay, Rice, Murray and Toledo are practically locks for the SEC. If Arky got even a little bit of tFlagship righted, ULL is a lock. (I'd outright call them a lock except that Arkansas lost to ULM last year.) Same story with Auburn, if they fixed anything they should beat WSU. WKU could get Kentucky but I think OSU beating MSU is more likely.
