The headline does not appear to jive with his direct quote.

Headline:
SEC Network leader 'alarmed' more carriers haven't signed up to carry channel

Quote:
“To be honest, it’s alarming (Charter) hasn’t signed up already, but deals often are made closer to launch.”

It appears the article is about Charter not being on board yet.

Good. This is who I have; I don't want to switch back to Time Warner (crap service), U-Verse isn't available in my area, and the last time I had satellite service it would always go out in bad weather (with The Weather Channel being the first one to go out).

It's going to start early around here. They've announced that Kentucky Basketball's August trip to the Bahamas will be partially televised on ESPNU and partially televised on SEC Network.

Shots have officially been fired.

Yep, stroke of genius by the SEC Network people. They poked the proverbial hornets' nest with that one.

Charter in Birmingham might as well shut down if they don't pick up the SEC Network. The Birmingham market has the highest college football ratings in the nation by far. The same number of people in Birmingham watch college football as the entire Chicago metro area. The Auburn/Arkansas game is week one on the SEC Network. Time is ticking.

somebody in the SEC office could make bank just signing up cable providers with the SEC Network.

Maybe if they know who to blame. Many might naturally try to blame the SEC first which is the last thing he wants.

In the article he was asked, presumably by a SEC fan, what he was doing to get the network in more places. This posture allows him to shift blame away from the SEC and towards the cable companies when distribution this fall is lower than fan expectations.

SEC fans are just assuming they will get it. This is a resetting of those expectations.

Only like 7-13% of the population actually watch college football, and something like 2-3 percent tops nationally will tune in to a massive SEC game. I don't think the SEC really has that much of a bargaining chip.

I didn't wait that long. DirecTV sent me an email a couple months ago stating they would not have the SEC network. I switched to U-Verse about two weeks later.

I just called DirecTV after reading this and was told that this is not true. Once I bypassed the foreigner that had no idea what the hell I was talking about, I talked to a really nice lady who told me to check [link=(directvpromise.com)]https://directvpromise.com/no-fan-should-be-sidelined/[/link] to get updates. I'm holding out until the 11th hour, but I did find out how much it would cost me to cancel my contract in August while I was on the phone with her...

If those numbers are true, your post completely contradicts itself and you don't even realize it.

That is the position of the cable companies and they are wrong.

What the SEC has, more than anything, is a fanatic fanbase. The SEC has a bunch of people that are currently customers but can quickly become liabilities to these cable companies.

This fall any cable company in the south without the SEC Network will have its social media pages violated, bad PR, pissed off customers, angled local news reports, as well as possible damage to their actual buildings and office parks from the tree poisoners in the flock. I mean who knows, we are crazy. There might even be death threats.

SEC fans might be a minority, but we are a loud minority and we are more unified for the cause than the other 90% of customers are about anything related to cable.

When you consider the fact that AT&T, Disney and Dish are all benefited monetarily by making the cable companies the "bad guy" in all this, it leads to a situation where they almost all will cave by year three. Just this first year will be really rough, because they have to know we are serious.

Its basically extortion, but frick it from that we will get the kind of exposure and facilities that will put a wider gap between us and the rest of college football. It will also allow the SEC to suck all the value out of the husk that is the traditional cable market while positioning their brand perfectly to customers for an À la carte future sometime in 20+ years.

It is true. DirectTV sent out that email then changed their tune a few days later with a follow up email saying nothing had been decided. Well, I decided to take the decision away from them. I am now good to go.

I've already had it with cox shitty service. If they don't pick up the network by the first week of aug then I'm switching to Uverse.

Dish is grinning like the cat that ate the canary at all these others. They know full well this drama will bring them some new subscribers.

Have ATT. Was thinking about switching to comcast but I'm not sure they're going to get a deal done.

I'm going to use that guy's numbers from a few posts above.

If only 2-3% of the country tune in for a big SEC game, let's just assume 1/5 of that actually care about the SECN (it's likely much more). So 0.4% of the population we're talking about. We'll take Direct TV for example, as they currently do not have the SECN. DTV has 20M subscribers (this can be googled).

So 0.4% of 20M gives you 80,000 people. Say each person is paying $100/month on average for their bill. Multiply that by 12 and you're talking about upwards of 100 million dollars per year that DTV could lose out on.

This is a conservative estimate.

ETA: Disregard previous edit. Numbers were off.

Yep - I currently have Charter - I've already called Dish to set up an install for the 2nd week in August just incase Charter dicks around and doesn't add the network. If Charter jumps onboard then I cancel the Dish order.

Dish is huge for the SEC as well. It is one deal that puts pressure on cable providers (and Directv) all over the south. Much of the region is rural so Dish hits that market, and the rest can be threatened by Dish.

ESPN learned the hard way with the LHN. You need a "union buster," you need a scab. Dish is our scab.

I have no choice but to stick with Directv. Dish does not carry Extra Innings or Sunday Ticket which are far more important to me than the SEC Network
