They didn't want to. But could you imagine the headlines if they denied it?

"Alabama Dominated Board of Trustees Denies UAB Football Program for No Reason At All."

As soon as the opportunity presented itself, they shut it down. Basically started a program and then refused to fund it at all. Stadium in the hood off campus, won't give any money for facilities and a new stadium, no coach, etc... all the while Bryant Jr stating he wants to see them win. You really believe that? You think anyone with a crimson A wants to see another in-state school do well enough to possibly take recruits from Alabama?

The board is heavily dominated with Bama alumni, and they clearly keep UA as their #1 interest.

Big donors and select current and former BOT members' disdain for UAB goes back to 1977 when Gene Bartow was hired. Bear didn't want UAB to have basketball. What's happening now has been building for over 30 yrs.

UAB basketball won't be around in 2020.

OH MY GOD, THEN WHY DID THEY START IT?

People who like Alabama football are naturally evil and hate all things good and nice in the world. The red and white draws the evil doers in. The evil Alabama fans on the BoT were just following their natural evil ways by starting a football program that they knew they would never support and actively seek to destroy. They did this because they enjoyed getting fans/city/students hopes up, and then just CRUSHING them. The BoT watched that video of the players crying in a closed session, and the members of the BoT just laughed and laughed and laughed until their ribs were sore.

Yep. Bryant tried his damnest to ruin the AD there, and now his son is following through with his dad's wishes.

You seriously think they would have been backlash if a satellite campus with no sports pedigree at all was denied a division one football team?

Stadium in the hood off campus? I guess it was ok for Bama to play there all the time but the Bot must have made the place ghetto after UA stopped playing there.

You think the BOT and most Bama fans stay awake at night worrying about Troy or USA stealing the occasional recruit? Why would they worry about UAB? Has UA ever lost out on a player to them?

So much so that they let UAB have a D1 football team for 20 years despite all the reasons you just stated why they shouldn't have.

Not quite the same area it is now as when Alabama was playing a majority of its games there in the 1960's and 1970's. After some fans were beaten and some of them badly after a Stallions game in 1984 a lot of Alabama fans started expressing displeasure about the area. With the upper deck expansion in 1988 Alabama started playing fewer games at Legion Field.

If Legion Field held 104,000 and the NCAA still let recruits go to neutral sites, how many Alabama fans would want to go back to playing a few games a year over there?

If the funds were there, yea. Not to mention plenty of satellite schools have football teams. If anything, they should have made UAB an FCS school. I agree with an earlier poster who said that. It would make more sense for a first year team.

I'd hope the fans don't. But the BoT is there to protect Bama, and it's been well known Bryant Sr.'s loathe for all things UAB. Odd that his son is on the BoT and is part of killing the program.

hell idk, but they'd have a better chance of it if they had a decent stadium and some facilities worth a squirt of piss. That was my entire point.

A case had to be built to kill the program. And you don't just 'let' schools create programs. It's not like asking your parents if you can go to the movies. They have to make a decision, but it has to make sense at the time. It obviously did, even though many boosters and alumni opposed it.

Ah the tired line of "insert team here crying".

another sign that you also have nothing left to say.

I thought you were trying to be funny until now, but you truly are clueless; Bama played ALL their games against big-time opponents at Legion Field until the BDS expansion in the late 80's because Legion Field had a higher capacity. Bama's Iron Bowl home games were played at Legion Field until around 2000.

for the record, no SEC Rant poster who is not an Alabama fan is a bigger fan/supporter of Bear Bryant than yours truly.

Was Bryant Jr on the BOT when UAB started football?

USA has a decent stadium. I have no clue about Troys stadium but I assume it's decent. Say we elevated UAB to those levels of facilities and Stadium, do they start stealing recruits then?

We played for a long time.

A case had to be built to kill the program they just created?

But to think that they looked at the decision and decided it didn't make sense anymore is wrong. It was just the BOT holding grudges.

I didn't say a team was crying, I said you are crying. And I don't need to say anything because there's nothing left to say. You will continue to criticize Alabama even though you don't really care about this issue, and I will continue to laugh at you and your declining program.

Yep....maybe the Auburn fans in this thread would like to comment on AU's commitment to the city of Birmingham specifically as it realtes to the Iron Bowl.
