Mississippi State could return a ton off a 8 or 9 win team and still would be behind teams like Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and A&M in AP preseason or in Preseason football magazine.

nor have many Georgia fans hyped him since his arrival
Maybe you haven't but I think your bias is kicking in here a little bit. Georgia fans aren't immune to the unrealistic hyping that happens everywhere.

Tell me what you expectations should be if you were a Mississippi State fan?
Any program in the SEC with the amount of cash that is coming in from the Network coupled with fair distributions among all the programs is capable of being a Top 25 program at any given time over a long span of years.
But the question is not "What should be the expectations be at Mississippi State?" The issue is that the Mullen-hypers claim he's the 2nd best coach in the league, when his results are nowhere close to that mark.
No one disputes the fact that Mullen has done an alright job AT MISSISSIPPI STATE. What is disputed is that somehow what he's done at Mississippi State makes him the 2nd best coach in the league. THAT is where the problem lies.

Sumlin at #3 just goes to show polls are meaningless popularity contests. What matters is the wins and championships.

The issue is that you could destroy any coach listed as 2nd best in the SEC.

Where's the irrational hype for Mac?
I think most of us are near the end of our patience with him and more specifically his offenses.

Nah. Freeze had a logical claim to it until his ousting. I think Gus certainly makes a logical claim. Sumlin even has more of a claim than does Mullen. And while I personally think Florida is doomed to mediocrity as long as Mac is their coach, I could at least understand why someone might want to make that claim.
Gus won the SEC... the SEC West... and played for a National Title.... He's also taken Auburn to two major bowl games.
McElwain has won the East every year he's coached at Florida.
Sumlin coached A&M to a Top 5 finish in 2012 which included a win in Tuscaloosa. He's produced two team that finished in the Top 25 since 2012 while Mullen has the same number but with 3 extra years of trying.
There is zero rational credentials to justify the "Mullen 2nd best coach in the SEC" argument. Zero.

Well I do think Florida fans started to see the truth after the loss to Michigan. But up until this past season most Florida fans on this board seemed unrealistic at looking at the real facts.
I think any coach has to have at least 2 full years under his belt before his resume can begin to be compared to others. So I'll leave out Kirby, Odom, Muschamp, and whoever Ole Miss' coach is now. Here's how I'd rank the SEC coaches that are left:
1. Saban
2. Gus
3. Mac
4. Sumlin
5. Mullen
6. Mason
7. Jones
8. Bielema
9. Stoops
