Most people know about Auburn and it has an excellent reputation.

The fact that most people don't know WHERE it is is fine with most of us.

Because of their knowledge of the academic standing? Please.

It's because of the name and nothing more.

People think the same about Clemson.

They also think USCw and Miami are public.

Maybe in the South. Most of the people I know on the West Coast and up North haven't heard of half the SEC schools

Flagship doesn't necessarily mean "better academics." If that were the case, EMORY would trump em all in Georgia.

Emory is private.

GT is basically just and engineering school and is considered top 4 or 5 in the country overall in engineering. Vandy is the only close school to them as they have been considered up near the top 20 overall universities in the country.

I thought for the longest time that Southern Cal was public, and just recently found out that Miami was private.

Most people probably don't realize Vandy is private, either.

Don't know why in God's name anyone would think Auburn was a private school.

I believe they have a pretty good Business program, but people who study business always go to UGA anyway. Better reputation.

UGA is getting an engineering department! WOOHOO! Nerds rejoice.

Veterinary, architecture, business, as well as engineering and agriculture. Auburn's nursing school is highly competitive to get into.

Don't forget the School of Pharmacy at Auburn.

those of us in "systems" of higher education are frequently actively discouraged from using the term "flagship" to refer to our campuses because it is seen as hurtful to the self-esteem of colleagues at other institutions in our systems. The use of the term is seen by some as elitist and boastful. It is viewed by many, in the context of the politics of higher education, as "politically incorrect." ... Only in the safe company of alumni is one permitted to use the term

Strange. Auburn's acceptance rate is 80%.

The only thing that takes into account is number of applicants vs number accepted. Alabama employs all kinds of gimmicks to get people to apply just to be turned down. A few years ago they were giving out $5 online gift cards for people to "apply" so that they could be turned down.

Alabama and Auburn are about on par with each other academically so it's pretty pointless to argue. I know Alabama has been trying to increase enrollment to up over 30k, so the acceptance rate is around 60 percent. And I'm pretty sure I heard someone say Auburn's also trying to grow so they're acceptance rates may be a little skewed. Bottom line is they're both quality schools that attract lots of out of state students (like me)

What's your definition of flagship? They were extablished first. We have more students, make more money, have better academics...

MSU over OM: More students, higher entrance scores, more selective acceptance rate, much more research money, much larger campus, higher average salary both immediately after graduation and after 20 years...

OM over MSU: Established 30 years earlier. Higher endowment.

South Carolina?

There is no question about it. Our main campus is about 10,000 more than Clemson. We also have satellite campuses all over the state that Clemson doesn't that, if counted, would put us at about 22,000 more students than Clemson.
