The whole "Flagship" thing is kind of useless because, as had been demonstrated by this thread, it can mean many things. I think which universities in the SEC are Research I institutions probably is probably more in the spirit of what the OP posted.

This of Carnegie Mellon's 96 top research institutions in the U.S. When universities are trying to get R1 recognition, this is the list they are trying to make. And don't shoot the messenger here :-p You may ask, "Why does CM's opinion matter?" I don't know the ins and outs, but I know that apparently this is the benchmark for this.

I was thinking he was probably joking but wasn't sure, if he was he should have made it more obvious

I got busy and just got back to this thread.

Sorry UGA, I dind't know you would get so butt hurt. I just think of Ga Tech as a nerd school, so I figured they had better academics, even though I respect UGA.

at Moo State having a nicer campus than OM.

at AU being perceived as private because it's so awesome

at AU for perceived as in GA because it's so awesome

to Arky for being the king of the flagships.

Georgia and Georgia Tech are part of the same system regardless. They both are governed by the University System of Georgia. With that being said, I am comfortable with you giving the nod to Tech over UGA.

Not butthurt at all, it's just ridiculous how stupid some people can be. This isn't a pun at you either.

Let's not forget, GT's primary focus is engineering. We have everything, and are getting an engineering department by 2013 I believe.

Anywho, UGA was founded 20 years earlier than Tech, and we have campuses across the state and in a little country called Costa Rica. GT doesn't... They may be slightly better academically, but that doesn't credit them being the flagship school...

Last I checked, we were tied with Ohio State and Purdue in terms of academics according to US News. That's only 3 spots behind Florida. GT is ranked 35th I believe.

ETA: Flagship doesn't mean which public school is the best academically IMO. It's the STATE School, and UGA is the STATE school of GA, not GT.

Georgia Tech was founded by a UGA grad and trustee member, Nathaniel Harris LINK

We own them in every respect of the word

Are you talking about the country of Costa Rica that is in no way an island? Perhaps you're thinking about Puerto Rico?

The State of Mississippi still considers Ole Miss the Flagship University......no matter how many times Mullen's Communist-style propaganda tells you differently.

If this is true, then why do more than two times the number of high school students of Mississippi CHOOSE to attend State over Ole Miss?

The past two decades more and more Mississippians have been attending State while Ole Miss draws more out of State students.

It is funny how Auburn fans always brag that Auburn is "harder to get into" than Alabama. If you point out the respective acceptance rates to both schools, they respond with classic bullshite like "Auburn's quality of applicants is much higher; anyone and everyone applies to Alabama," or, better yet, they give you the classic account of someone they "know" that didn't get into Auburn but got a full scholarship at Bama. Of course they're lying, but there's no way to prove it.
