Apparently neither did anyone needing a head coach, hence the move to USF.

Being the OC at Alabama would broaden his head coaching opportunities exponentially more than USF.

So a guy who is "knocking on the door" to be a head coach just went from the offensive coordinator position at Texas to the same role at South Florida, but he wouldn't take the OC spot at Alabama?

You may want to run that through your head one more time.

Coach Saban: Hey Sterlin, wanna coach all these 4-5*s up here for double your pay? My OCs keep getting hired away for really nice jobs.

Sterlin: Ummm...OK.

Would it though? Does him having a top offense at USF, really hurt him more than having a 20th offense or so at Bama?

Serious question

Bama OCs under Saban

Major-Fired

Jim Mac- to Colorado State-one of the worst programs in D1

Kiffin- to FAU-one of the worst programs in D1

I dont think it is necessarily easier to turn the Bama OC job into a good head coaching job.

If this is your logic, why would Canada leave Pitt for LSU?

Hurt him? No.

Would learning organizational structure, recruiting contacts, strength and conditioning programs, etc. from Saban help him get a head coaching job more than being an OC at South Florida? Absolutely.

That is a fair point. I am not saying it is impossible, I am just pointing out times have changed in terms of coaches just automatically leaping to the big name programs. It isnt as simple as "we are bigger with more 5 stars, come here."

Fair point. But if Mac and Smart dont turn it around, there will be a hiatus on the Saban tree.

I think Smart will, I am uncertain about Mac

I'm so confused as to why Alabama fans want Chip Kelly, and why they think people are concerned with them getting Chip Kelly.

Bama fans constantly cried about Lane Kiffin not pounding the ball with the RBs.. do you really think Captain Spread will line up and pound the ball?

I dont think Bama fans that understand football want Kelly. And I dont think Saban wants him either

I understand that but there are mainly two reasons coaches do that. Money being probably the first and getting the most exposure that they can to make it to the next level. Whether that is a HC or a move to the NFL. Where do you think he would have the best opportunity to make that happen?

He hated recruiting and cried in a staff meeting because he got yelled at. Would you want him as your OC or head coach?

quote:

Jim Mac- to Colorado State-one of the worst programs in D1

He was a West Coast guy who used what he learned from Saban to land a Top 5 job and has won the SEC East in both of his seasons as the head coach at Florida.

Kiffin- to FAU-one of the worst programs in D1

Kiffin was going to get the Houston job before the Texas high school coaches puffed out their chests and demanded Applewhite be hired instead.

Maybe. Maybe not.

But think of it like this. We can all agree that Georgia, Florida and Florida State are definitely in the Top 15 coaching jobs in all of college football and their head coaches are all Saban disciples. You can throw Derek Dooley in there too if you want from his time at Tennessee.

Who from Charlie Strong's coaching tree has made the leap to a Power 5, Top 15 program level head coach?

I'd think the multiple threads being started about it by LSU fans prove otherwise.

This is disengenuos

Mac didnt go to power 5 from Bama, he went to Colorado State

Jimbo also didnt go to power 5 from Saban.

Smart did go straight to power 5, but he was defensive coordinator

However, Strong has had two coaches become head coaches

Mike Sanford: Indiana State
Jay Norvell: Nevada

We are talking about what helps build a resume better, being an OC at Alabama or South Florida.

quote:

Mac didnt go to power 5 from Bama, he went to Colorado State

Would Florida have hired Mac if he didn't coach at Alabama before Colorado State? Probably not. He won two NCs as our offensive coordinator.

quote:

Jimbo also didnt go to power 5 from Saban.

He was named head coach in waiting at FSU directly because of his work with Saban.

quote:

Smart did go straight to power 5, but he was defensive coordinator

It doesn't matter what side of the ball he comes from. He had experience working under the best in the business and he was rewarded for it.

quote:

I mean Tennessee hired Derek Dooley not for what he did at Louisiana Tech, but for the time he spent with Saban.

Hell, Saban even got Bobby Williams a head coaching gig.

And speaking of Michigan State, I forgot Mark D'Antonio is a Saban disciple as well.
