don't see that depth that would make them an elite group, but again I'm fairly ignorant on their individual talent.

Well, I have time to break it down for you now. Alex Carter, the cb I mentioned, will probably be a first round draft pick when he is eligible as he is a true sophmore. I've seen Ed Reynolds, the FS, at pick #40, so high 2nd round. Jordan Richards, his counterpart, is another that could crack the 1st round two drafts from now. Browning is the returning starter on the other side (11 starts) but might be usurped by 5* Lyons as he was injured last year. Amanam played nickel back last year and he had 42 tackles, 10.5 tfl, and 3 fumble recoveries as the 6th db mentioned here. Stanford got them a secondary, the achilles heal for many years.

I don't even now where to begin with the front seven. At DE spot Ben Gardner is the biggest name. However, stuck behind Henry Anderson on the other side is, is Josh Mauro. The latter tallied 6 tackles in the RoseBowl and will be a redshirt senior. I covet Mauro and he is the 3rd DE in this rotation. The fourth DE is Shittu, a high school all American, that was in the rotation last year.

Parry is the nose tackle projected to start. This is the spot that doesn't return it's starter. However, Parry is a good one and he got the nod 3 times last year, including the rose bowl and pac 12 championship game. The two deeps one question mark is the back up here. Most think Callihan will take this spot from Baton Rouge, LA.

The linebacking corp is full of studs in the two deep. Trent Murphy, Shayne Skov, James Vaughters, and Noor Davis are the project starters. The latter two are from the deep south and had offers from everyone including Bama. The backups include Kalambayi (North Carolina with Florida offer), Hemschoot (love this kid - Oregon really wanted him out of Colorado), Anderson and Martinez, all of whom appeared in every game last year except Kalambayi.

I'm sure you know the gator roster front to back and top to bottom. Because that's how I know the LSU roster.

Defensive secondary returns six of eight that played in the defensive rotation. Four of those eight were freshmen. One CB was Fr AA the other was Fr All SEC. Returning starting safety was #1 safety in the country coming out of high school.

Barrow is a returning starting LB with 100+ tackles in '12. Two freshmen return that split starting roll last year. Two more freshmen played in rotation. Two upperclassmen return from academic probation. Both played in bowl game, one started it.

Freak and Ego will be the best pair of starting DTs in the SEC. Rasco, Allen and Hunter will be a solid core of DEs to build upon. Tigers starting front four will be all JRs. Three and four years in the program.

LSU brings in some of the best defensive talent in the country with the '13 recruiting class.

Tigers lost a bunch but, they had seven new starters on the '12 defense just like '13.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

They didn't always play well, but AU's DTs (Blaxson or Blackson, whatever, and Whitaker or Carter, whoever I'm thinking about) are better than they're given credit for. Freak is the best player obviously, uhhhh, yeah, I think I'll side with ya. Freak and Ego will (by the end of the year anyway) be the best DT duo for the 43 teams in the SEC.

I was tempted to put LSU in the top 5 knowing the freakish talent that was stacked behind Montgomery and Mingo. However, LSU has too many question marks for preseason.

I think the D will be good but I'd be surprised if they look like an elite D. Of course the 2012 D did a lot better than I thought they would. Maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise.

By elite do you mean top 5 because you certainly expect them to be to 10, right?

Right, that pretty much sums it up. Our O is going to have to find another gear or we'll have no chance of ATL...imo.

From everything I saw read and heard Ego actually had a more dominant spring than freak.

All LSU needs along the D-line is some quality depth. The starters will be lights out.

And how have you made it a full page already without getting blasted for that? I think we'll be improved, but top 5 is a bit of a stretch IMO. It all depends in our secondary, specifically the corner position.

Maybe, they lost some good talent, but I think they'll be alright.

I believe that Stanford has one of the best defenses outside the SEC in years. We'll see. They return 10/11 starters, Skov is finally healthy and they add some top shelf talent to already experienced two deep.

I'm never really sure how to rank nonSEC defenses. Stanford was clearly really good last season considering how the shut Oregon down. But I also thought Notre Dame had a great defense... and we all know how that ended.
