You do realize there were more than two names being thrown around don't you? It wasn't Gus or BP.

I know you. You're a dumb Bama fan who thinks he knows my school. BP was on very fews want list. Feel free to retort, redneck.
Couldn't have said it better myself

There were more than two thrown around. But it looks like Auburn made the correct hire... even though it was not popular at the time.

Patterson
Strong
Petrino
Smart
Malzahn
Jimbo
Those were names being thrown around
Order of want by a majority of AU fans was probably:
Jimbo (didn't know how realistic it was)
Strong
Patterson (there was a large group that opposed)
Petrino (large group that absolutely hated the man)
Malzahn (didn't think he had the experience)
Smart (just seemed like it would be a weird hire)

Would Auburn hire BP if Gus left?
He was never seriously considered because of the group so opposed to his hire.

So the silent majority wanted who?
BP was well ahead of Gus on that group then.
But the question does remain. Would Auburn hire BP if Gus left? The answer would be yes. And not think twice.
Furthermore, as a Bama fan, there would be a lot of support in T Town for BP as well. Even with the Smart still there.
Now... tell the truth.
BP would not be considered now, even if Gus did leave. BP would have turned it around quickly, but the program is in much better shape than before.
I do think Bama will look at BP after they are turned down by some Pro HCs. Smart's ship has sailed, especially if Gus runs rough shot over his D this year.

No because we at Auburn are not afforded the ability to not have great recruiters and still bring in top talent. Petrino doesn't recruit heavily. We've already had coaches like him and long term they didnt work out. We are not like Arkansas in that we sit right next to the most talent rich state. There's Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Miss St, Ole Miss going after the same players in generally low populated areas.

Maybe... maybe not.
But, like I posted, it appears you got the right guy for now.

Not so fast my friend...
Gus could very well pull a 9-3 type regular season this year. That wasn't good enough for Tommy T. What makes you think it is for Gus... if it happens? And it is a real possibility this year.

Auburn offered Sumlin. He turned it down.
