Miss State played its "home game" vs Auburn at Legion Field in 1970. Didn't turn out well.

One thing State fans have to give Jackie Sherrill credit for is ending the sale of home games and moving all home games back to Starkville.

Legion Field was a dump in the 70s. The city of Birmingham paid UAT a lot of money to keep games there. Ask Pat Dye what happens when you try to break up the cities little enterprise. The only reason AU played there in the 60s and 70s was because the SEC would not force Home and Home Games.

Was Georgia Tech still a member of the SEC in 1968? I don't recall Oregon State or Louisville ever being members of the SEC.Help me out here.

Not true. Every other year we played LSU at our other home stadium in Baton Rouge, LA.

Always thought they played there to satisfy boosters in the area.

Now a days that is the primary reason we play there along with maybe catching the eyes of a few recruits from the eastern half of the state.

Back in the day though it was a real pain in the butt to get to Fayetteville, the area wasn't in the semi-permanent economic boom its in now, and Little Rock was the football center of the state. Not to mention the on campus football stadium was quite a bit smaller War Memorial.

Now its a breeze to get up here, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone who is well to do, and NW Arkansas churns out a huge chunk of the in state talent. Not to mention the renovated stadium up here is both bigger and nicer then WM.

In the very near future we could see the last Razorback game played in War Memorial. Jeff Long is all about the money, and we make a lot more playing in Fayetteville then we do in Little Rock.

Remembers those contracts were made years in advance. The Oregon State game was a double header with Bama, this was encouraged by the SEC. The Louisville game had about 24k in attendance and Louisville barley had a football team.

Auburn had to play UGA in Columbus, Ga for many years. I do not think the extra 40 min drive made a difference. TN always insisted on playing in BHM. Not much of a home field advantage at those other venues for AU.

Could you imagine if the SEC tried that today.

Only game I ever made it to @ Legion Field was the '84 UGA-Bama game where Pulpwood Smith went off for 2 long TD runs & UGA won 24-14(Bama went 5-6 that year)...

We parked at somebody's house, they had BBQ cooking & for sale and they let us use the bathroom in their house while we tailgated in their yard.

Heard a lotta bad about Legion Field & the environs but we had a great time that day...

If they rolled you a doobie in the back bedroom and let you get high as hell pre-game, then I bet I know the house.

Coulda been the same ... I had just turned 30 & was the youngest in our party so they might've decided not to puff/pass with us. They packed about 15-20 cars in a side yard about the size of a large deck...

Bryant liked to eat at The Bright Star.
They kept a supply of Chesterfields and his favorite red whiskey on hand.

It had a concrete AstroTurf playing surface that was a patchwork by 1980. The bathrooms were cinder block troughs and the concessions were coke and a dog. The only backed seats where the gold section owned by the city and Bammers. There was prison razor blade wire around the entire stadium. Parking was on a pebbled lot or in someone's front yard. Did I leave anything out?

Legion Field was a lot bigger for years and Bryant liked playing there. At the time they obliged him when he would 'suggest' things. After Alabama beat Tennessee in 1971 before a then "record" crowd he noted that with Nebraska and Southern California on the schedule for the '78 season that it sure would be nice if there was more seating. It went up to 78,000 that year -- which was pretty darn big for that era.

It wasn't that unusual for SEC teams to play games at "neutral sites" in the 1960's and 1970's. Ole Miss and State played a ton of games in Jackson, Florida played a handful in Tampa after the original Tampa Stadium was built in 1967 and Tennessee would play a game in Memphis -- other than Memphis State about once every three years.

Yep. The Liberty Bowl in Memphis has served as 'home field' for ~3 or 4 SEC teams (not sure if Vandy has ever used it in their series with OM). When we had OM on the schedule my step-dad assumed it would be in Memphis and was surprised it was in Oxford because for ages Memphis was where we always played them.

The SEC Championship was played at Legion Field before going to the Georgia dome.

1) Because LG is a dumpster fire.

2) Getting shook down by the hoodrats to park on the street only to be shook down when you come back to your car because they've "been keeping an eye on it for you"

LG is about 5 mins from my house but I'll gladly make the drive to T-town.

I saw some epic games at LG from the 70s through the 90s. It was a special place in it's prime.
