My not so fond memory of Dixie was when Notre Dame played Ole Miss in Jackson in 1977. ND was favored by 3 touchdowns. To make a long hot and humid story short, Ole Miss beat ND 20-13 and the Ole Miss band kept playing "Dixie" over and over again.
The next game, ND was losing again and Coach Dan Devine put his 3rd string QB into the game in the 4th quarter... a guy by the name of Joe Montana. ND scored 17 unanswered points to win the game, didn't lose another game that year, trounced Earl Campbell and Texas in the Cotton Bowl and won the National Championship.
Every time I hear "Dixie", I remember that game in Jackson....

PC police has destroyed Ole Miss's traditions. everything from Colonel Reb, Dixie with love and the rebel flag. People have claimed the words "Ole Miss", refers to a slave woman calling her master. I guess Ole Miss should bend over for this too. Do you see how stupid all this is? I don't care if it sounded racist, and how it looked racist. It wasn't and all they did was stroke the fat cats cocks up north to please them. They had zero clue about Ole Miss customs and traditions and they shite all over it and you people let them. but hey, congrats on the black bear.

I wasn't talking about who plays Dixie now, I was wondering who played it in the past. My guess is every school in the SEC (and the south) played it back in the 50's and 60's. In addition to Georgia and Florida, I am pretty sure Arkansas played it. I know Arkansas State played it. My high school band played it and we played "the U of F Version. I also played in Ole Miss band and we played
U of F version which is what they still play.
Scroll to the bottom of this link and you will see where Iowa Hawkeye Band plays FDWL. They wrote the original that Ole Miss playes. LINK

First and foremost, this is a stupid troll thread with its only intent being to rip on a sensitive subject to Ole Miss.
That being said:
You just summed up the problem nicely. When you start to care, give us a call. Until then, you are free to think what you like and even express those thoughts, but don't expect the rest of us to embrace your worldview.

Wrong.
This is a thread wondering if they stopped playing the fast version since I haven't heard it any on tv this year & heard it often last year.
Keep assuming things... & well... you know what they say about that... Enjoy your mediocre season. Have a good day.

my HS in East TX played it till the late 90's. Midland HS out west even had the battle flag as their school flag until early 90's. The aggie band used to play it, but not sure when they stopped

If it is just a song and no big deal then why isn't it played anymore? This PC crap is totally out of hand and people need to stand up to it.
Would Ebola even be in the country if we quarantined people from the places it is rampant? We can't do that it is not right and fairrrrrr.
Wait til after the election when you have 12 to 15 million new US Citizens, because it's only fair and if you oppose you're some kind of racist.
Someone has to make a stand. Too bad it wasn't the "Bears"

Since the administration wants to eliminate most, if not all, Old South images and trappings, why do they allow Dixie to be played at all?
My guess is that the song doesn't offend AAs the way the confederate flag does or the Colonial. Then again, I heard talk that the OM administration wants to deemphasize Ole Miss outside of athletics.

Its rediculous that they don't play dixie anymore. I wish all of these PC butt hurt mothefrickers would drop dead. There isn't a damn thing racists about the song Dixie. Its just damn song, a beautiful song.

now that I think about it, we learned it back in 2nd grade along with the texas our texas and the star spangled banner. even sang it in a school play, iirc

Its rediculous that the country has become pussified. I am far from a Ole Miss fan. I bleed purple & gold to the core, but I hope that someone at Ole Miss will nutt up and grow a pair. They need to tell whoever cares to go to hell, this is our tradition and we are bringing it back.

quote:Arkansas band stopped playing Dixie in 1969. It's well covered in the book "Horns, Hogs, and Nixon's Coming" about the 1969 Arkansas vs Texas game.
wasn't talking about who plays Dixie now, I was wondering who played it in the past.
Black Students Association threatened to stage a sit-down on the field if the band played Dixie during the game. To save embarrassment from this sort of demonstration during the nationally televised game the University Administration and Band Director acquiesced.

Let them sit. You give in and they win. If they sit.boo their asses and go home.

Dixie has been played almost everywhere in the past. It was written by an Ohio native and endeared by most all until political propaganda orchestrated it into something negative. But I can understand why Ole Miss has distanced itself from "Dixie". It's from the destructive effect of political propaganda.
