To be honest, I enjoyed UT's band doing the wagon wheel program in Bryant Denny last season more than that shite the Million Dollar Band put on at half time.

Our band selections piss me off so much. Fans get all jacked up during the big LSU game last year and by the time halftime rolls around our band decides to play a "Melody of Love Songs" and the crowd wants to puke.

The two worst bands in the SEC are Mississippi State and Tennessee. Good to see Tennessee take care of their problem. MSU needs to fire its director.

Vandy's band clearly is not being considered. Granted, it'd be better if it didn't exist compared to how bad it is.

Actually until the last 10-15 yrs or so Tennessee generally had one of the better marching bands in the SEC.

seriously, UT's band historically has been top shelf. I always liked the either PA guy or band "announcer"...the University of Tennessee PRIIIIIIIIIIIDE of the Southland MARCHING BAND !"

I know Vol fans are dying to hear my take on their band, but IMO in the late 90's or so when they went into Rocky Top overdrive their overall quality went down.

Vandy's doesn't count as a pure SEC band due to all the schools involved (Vandy, Belmont, Lipscomb, and Trevecca)...

Auburn's marching band is better than LSU's.

I'm not nor have I ever been in the Pride. I'd have to ask someone who was but I'd wager they had a blast. I'm convinced the whole 'band nerd' stereotype is there to keep us all from knowing the truth about the wild sex and booze/drug filled parties they're always having.

They party like Charlie Sheen...

UK's band got so bad with song selections that the fans revolted. When you open every performance with dirges, the football atmosphere disappears.

About 5 years ago there was an internet protest aimed at the Athletics Board. They had no control over the band, which was entirely under the Music Department, but they responded to the complaints by arranging to provide athletics money to improve it. The band director was moved to another position, the new director was paid by the Athletics Board and soon a brand new attitude was displayed by the band. They even got new unis and instruments.

Sometimes it takes a strong response from the fans. We now have an SEC-caliber band.

I'd put it more around until the last 5-8 -- that's when they started running out of all the steam leftover from the Julian era. They're still better than most bands but for anyone who remembers the Pride under Julian's tenure (which is most of the modern era ) it's feel like we plummeted. We haven't really dropped off that much but when you are as good as the Pride was under Julian even a single step back is noticeable and often looks worse than it is.

Julian was a rock star on campus -- we all knew who he was even those of us who never set foot in the Music Dept. That's why a lot of people are insulted by the 'Haslam' school of music (his name should've been on there somehow even if it was just as an addition like calling it the "Natalie Haslam AND Dr. W. J. Julian Music Center" or whatever). The Haslam name has been pasted all over campus in recent years and has been since the new business school was built (pasting your name everywhere - not one building but everyfreaking place you can find - is bad enough) but it was insulting, tacky as hell, and just plain tone deaf not to put Julian's name on there at all, especially when the family claims to love the music dept. at UT and Ms Haslam talks of how important it was to her in college.

At any rate... the Pride really does deserve a director that can fill his shoes given their history.

What?

Yep. We draw from a lot of the smaller colleges just to have one. It's pathetic. I really hope some serious funding and recruitment go into making it better. It's high school quality at best right now, and I just insulted several high school bands.

The bigger issue is that Vandy doesn't have a true music program like that of the big state schools. They do have the Blair School, but I don't believe there is any required tie-in with the band. Vandy's is all-volunteer and includes students from those other schools (who don't have football and therefore no marching outlet).

Vandy needs to fix that. Every single part of this state has an overabundance of musical talent and has contributed so much to so many genres and styles of music that it's unparalleled. Music City proper may be more a landing spot/mecca that musicians from around the state and country flock to in hopes of getting noticed or landing a record deal but dammit this is a matter of state pride and Middle Tennessee has plenty of homegrown and talented musicians to draw from.

Normally I would say this is impossible but Florida State and Oklahoma have shown it is possible.
