IMO, I think players should be given the choice of getting paid the equivalent of their scholarship or the scholarship itself. But they can't have both, and tuition is due on the 1st day of class.

I've been underpaid before too. I quit and got another job that paid me what I felt I was worth. They're not shackled to go to college. They're not slaves as some are making them out to be on here.
It's a market completely dominated by a monopoly entity (NCAA). As I mentioned before, if it wasn't given special anti-trust exemption, then it would be broken up by the government and become a competitively paying business.

The NCAA represents... schools and sports programs in ... schools.
If they want to be paid like other leagues, they're more than welcome to try out for them. Nothing is preventing them from doing so.

If they want to play professional football at the highest level they have no choice but to go through an NCAA institution.

No one is calling them victims. I just don't understand why we think it is okay for schools, coaches, and athletic directors to make millions in this game but the people who are on the field taking all of the risk and producing most of the product are unfairly compensated.
Exactly. Look, I'm not saying we should start franchising players. But, why not let them sign their own endorsement deals? Why not let them contract for their own value? Oh, because it will take money away from the university already making ridiculous money on a TV deal.

Yeah, but is there a monopoly in your profession? I doubt it.
True but now we're talking solely football and you can't do that. Basketball players can go to Europe. Other sports are almost universally non-revenue except a few sports at a few places.
Football is different but if you treat them differently it would be lawsuit city.

Using yalls arguments, High School football programs generates money with ticket sales. Those students should be paid as well.

You clearly don't have an understanding of monopoly economics and industries.

And are currently facing a possible class action lawsuit due to their representation and Anti-trust status

Still would not justify an argument the a volleyball player or a male Lacrosse player should be equally compensated as a football basketball player would. They are not worth as much and actually need the football player to fund their scholarship
Unless you are proposing individualized salaries for players (which is the antithesis of the definition of amateur), then you are proposing some sort of per diem. And per diems are absolutely within the purview of Title IX.

There's always other alternatives, albiet less likely. They can break the status quo. And if their purpose is to play professional football, then you make my point. They are receiving the tools necessary to make that possible, just like any other student, by going to college to learn. College isn't a job.

I do, and it has no bearing, as college isn't a job and they're not employed.

Bottom line: the question was should players be paid?
Answer: They already are.
Haven't really seen a legitimate rebuttal to the fact that student athletes are compensated.

Just like breaking into the oil business was a viable option when Standard Oil was running on all cylinders?
Logical fallacy, won't look up the specific name.
You are saying its not a job because it currently isn't (in the wage earning sense). The debate is whether that's complete bull shite.

If you really think the Anthropology Department at the University of Alabama is the same as the Athletic Department, then arguing with you is worthless.
Nonetheless, thank you for your contributions.

And I have no problem with the NCAA lawsuits. It's an entity, not a school. They've effed up alot of what is right in college sports.

I see your point Hunter, but these athletes are exploited. imo

I've always hated the idea of paying them. If it happens I hope there's something put in place like if you don't graduate all your tuition is due. If you're gonna pay them they need to have some type of responsibility.

You're saying people can't play football in lesser leagues to hone their skills and try to advance to the NFL?
Can you show me where the NFL mandates players play in college to be accepted into the league? Or show me where they have a bargaining agreement with colleges to exclude athletes, unless they play in college?

I wouldn't mind them paying back their scholarship, if they made NFL.
