A buddy of mine is flying in from Chicago to experience a game in Oxford for the first time this year for the Bama game. Asked me to try to get some intel for the grove per the subject line.
I searched and only found random posts about this and that. Sorry if I missed what I'm asking.

Make sure to visit the Walk of Champions and get a pic in front of the "Intimidator" (the 2003 SEC West co-champions banner)

Ole Miss board has some good info if you didn't search that specifically.

Get there early. Pour drinks/beer into solo/styrofoam cup. Keep alcohol somewhat inconspicuous and you'll be fine.
Go with an open mind and be friendly. People that dislike the grove are those that go in with a mindset of looking to find something to bitch about.

What exactly is he trying to do? Set up his own tent or is he looking for just the best way to go about the experience?

Get your chicken tenders on ice the night before the game.

I can buy weed in a store in California. But I can't drink beer in a can in the Grove. This world is fricked up.

Watch your head. You wouldn't want to bump into a chandelier

To be perfectly honest, it's difficult to enjoy the Grove if you don't have a tent where you're expected unless you're really outgoing. I'm assuming he's not a fan of either school, so wearing a shirt for his school of choice would be a good idea.
Ole Miss folks are friendly and outgoing, but if he's just walking through the Grove waiting on someone to pick him out of the crowd and offer him food and booze, he'll be disappointed. If people can tell he's a visitor just there for the spectacle, they'll be much more likely to stop him and want to talk, which leads inextricably to partying.
If he's less outgoing, tell him to go out on the square the night before and make friends. It's easier there, and he'll get invites from 100% of the people he let's know he's just there for the experience.
If he's got a big enough crew to justify it, setting up his own tent to use as a home base would be ideal. There are companies that will handle everything for him, but if he wants to do it himself, make sure he knows to find out what time the Grove opens and start circling campus jockeying for position well in advance, especially for that game. If he can get everything in his trunk, he can lie to the guards and tell them he's not tailgating and get on campus early. Just don't pull anything out of the trunk until the Grove opens. This is pretty obvious, but tell him not to try to drag everything to the Grove at once. Grab the tent only and sprint to the Grove when it opens. Set the tent up and then go back for the rest. Tell him not to get greedy looking for a great spot. Speed is important. Set up as quickly as possible before you get squeezed out.
Even if he'll have his own tent, he should still make friends the night before and wear his favorite college shirt. He should also make sure to invite the folks around him to share in his booze and food. They'll reciprocate, and a joyous time will be had by all.

Tell him to get ready for a lot of cold chick-fil-A nugget platters.

Thanks man - great set of tips.
He knows if he wears a Bama shirt he's dead to me.

The card is a joke in Cali. You just have to lie to the "doctor" at the MMJ Rec facility and you can get one in less than 30 minutes. Everyone I know has a card in LA. It's retarded

Eat at Ajax diner on the square. Place is frikkin delicious. All kinds of cool southern folk art on the walls too. And cute college girls wait on you. It's a great place.
