UT lucked into a title (thanks Arky).
Nope, Billy Ratliff absolutely murdered the Arkansas center, causing the stumble, causing the fumble.

Actually, if the refs had called the game correctly, none of that would have been necessary. On the previous series with 3 minutes to go, the ball sailed over the Arky punter's head and he kicked it through the end zone. Safety, right? That's what the refs said, but that was wrong. He was on the 5 when he kicked it. The correct call was UT ball on the 2.5 yard line - illegal kick on the 5 plus half the distance.

Wrong. Cheating offenses? Yes...some of them very minor like giving gum to a recruit chewing gum at airport so he could decompress. Also flying recruit on boosters plane during non official visit.....

Heres the truth: UF had been putrid in mid to late 1970s the with the wishbone offense fading. There was a rush to make cheating not worth it......by schools. UGA had been dominant and was abled to cripple UF and our in state rival (girls school) oall of a sudden came to be getting recruits we normally had gotten. Vince Dooley was on NCAA punishment board..any question?

NCAA decided to investigate two schools that were located in recruiting hotbeds ...., Texas & Florida..... any questions?

The 1980s finally saw the virtual end of artificial turfs....led by Steve Spurrier.....he got his natural turf for his fist game as HC in Okla State opener Sept 1990 and a preseason 4th pick. Final: UF 50 Ok St 7

There were some other things that made the 1980's a little unique. Through the 1987 season there were only 6 conference games.

I doubt Johnny Majors would have lasted as long as he did in today's world. His first several UT teams were barely over .500.

Quite a roller coaster ride for most teams. LSU went to the Orange Bowl and then fired Jerry Stovall the next year. Tennessee wins the SEC and Sugar in 1985 and then has to win their last 4 to go to a bowl in 1986.

They weren't SEC at the time, but 84 South Carolina was #2 and had a guaranteed spot in the Orange against Oklahoma until they somehow lost to Navy.

Still by far the worst loss in SC history. I don't think they would have beaten Oklahoma since they lost the bowl game to Oklahoma State, but they at least would have been there.

81 and 82 were both better teams than 1980.

I believe it was an Auburn team in 1982 that was the first SEC team to finish the season with more yards passing than rushing. LSU was the next SEC team to do it the following season, 1983.

I doubt it was Auburn since we ran the Wishbone in 1981-1984.

The Sugar Bowl against Pitt didn't matter though because Clemson finished undefeated and beat Georgia during the regular season.
