This will be bumped tomorrow, for sure. Once the Monday crowd gets here, you and I can learn a lot about where today's SEC came from.

couldn't win the voting contest in 83

Dye would always lose a game he shouldn't have lost. He had zero creativity on offense. Probably why he wanted Kirby over Gus.

Everything else Dye did for the program was unbelievable. He had talent to win a few titles though and never caught the breaks.

Agree, was just being a jackass. My pops always said that outside of the Bryant teams at Alabama and the 2009 Alabama team nobody was as tough and physical as Dye's 80's teams at Auburn.

Not the same though. In 89, Alabama beat Tennessee, Tennessee beat Auburn, and Auburn beat Alabama. They all had the same record.

Who learned everything he knew from Bear Bryant. The man was an assistant under Bear at Alabama throughout the early-60s.

I dunno, all the LSU fans will see "1980" and avoid it like the plague. As will Aggies and Hogs, and Bammers will just kind of look and move along.

I expect lots of old Pat Dye war stories.

SWC GOAT 80s conference

How many nattys? Thought so. It was the GOAT bunch of cheaters, that's for sure.

As for the SEC, all of the teams were run-oriented, which was the case for most of college football. Auburn, Florida and Georgia each had its best running back in school history. LSU won with a great bend-but-don't break defense during the Bill Arnsparger era. The SEC was big-boy football at its finest.

what other SEC teams should have had a legitimate shot at a national championship?

They weren't SEC at the time, but 84 South Carolina was #2 and had a guaranteed spot in the Orange against Oklahoma until they somehow lost to Navy.

And Auburn beat Florida, who beat LSU.

SMU actually claims 81 and 82.
Texas would've won in 83 but lost by 1 point to Georgia in the Cotton Bowl.

Me too. Pat Dye is the GOAT of stories. I mean, who can top this type of behavior?

Doesn't matter. In the 80s if you had the same conference record you generally shared the SEC crown. Auburn also had only one loss and were ranked #7 going into the post-season, as opposed to LSU's three losses and #16 ranking. Which is probably why Auburn went to the Sugar Bowl while LSU went to the Hall of Fame Bowl.

Go look at who LSU played OOC that year.
