In 1986, Ole Miss was 1 game from winning the conference, against Tennessee

In fact, only one quarter. The Rebs led 10-9 going into the 4th quarter, and then William Howard pounded them in the 4th to win 22-10. I used to have that game on VHS where I recorded it off TBS.

The 80s were before my lifetime, but seems like Tennessee has always been pushing Ole Miss around.

Hey now, that game rests high in Mississippi folklore. They can relish in the greatness of their dream season last year. I'll take a future all sec LT for the next four years. Good trade for both sides.

If anything, the 1980's was the age of the independent

Indeed it was. Penn St, Miami, FSU, and Notre Dame(more the late 80's) were dominant. Pitt also was a major force in the early 80's. Not only the powers, but other teams such as Memphis State(as they were known in the 80's), USM, Tulane, East Carolina, and South Carolina(remember they were independent in the 80's) had their moments. Most played many SEC teams and upset a few. West Va, Va Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Temple, Army, Navy, and Louisville were all independent also. SEC teams would play some of those teams also. I liked the set up of the 80's way more than today. The overall completion was better.

I was born in the 80s, so I don't remember football then. By the time I really remember football (90s), AU and UA were on probation, FSU and UF was the rage, and UT lucked into a title (thanks Arky).

Nope, Billy Ratliff absolutely murdered the Arkansas center, causing the stumble, causing the fumble. Was not luck, eat a dick.

John Bond with the white boy afro. That dude could run the wishbone option about as good as anyone. MSU was pretty dang good in 1980 and 81.

The lowest point of AU-UA had to be the 1998. Alabama goes 7-4, Auburn goes 3-8. Auburn played Gabe Gross at QB and some little 5-8 165 lb kid at RB.

Some Tiger standouts from the 80's: Dalton Hilliard, Wendell Davis, Tom Hodson, JeffcWickersham, Henry Thomas, Harvey Williams, Michael Brooks, Eric Martin, Eugene Daniel, Jeffrey Dale, Norman Jefferson, etc - most of whom played in the NFL. LSU had top 20 teams in '82 and '84-'88,

The SEC struggled from the same media bias that we so adamantly claim doesn't exist in our favor now. The voters were still largely coastal and upper midwest. The south had no voice. The 1983 Auburn team with its record and strength of schedule would have been named national champions every single year after the mid 2000's with the bias shift that occurred. Unfortunately Howard, the Miami coast, etc…was a better story than Pat's boys.

Here's a topic. Quarterback play in the SEC wasn't that great in the 1980's. It seemed like the only QB's that stood out from that decade were Kerwin Bell, Tommy Hodson and Kurt Page. None of those had much of an NFL career.

I guess we lucked into those back to back SEC titles. A feat that hasn't been duplicated since
