Yeah I remember having a visceral hatred for the Houston Cougars in both basketball and football.
The Twin Towers.
If I recall correctly, Houston is the only SWC program we have a losing record to is basketball.

To this day, I still have a little hate for Houston. I think of them as Da U of the SWC, and I consider them to be shitheads.
I can't say I remember feeling anything about Baylor, TTech, Rice or TCU. Had the Death Penalty stuff not happened, SMU might be in the Big 12 today instead of Baylor. I think they had more money and power around their program than Baylor ever could have hoped for.
What is scary to think about is that if we had not gone to the SEC, they probably would have done the Big 12 without us. When you see this Pony Excess stuff and see how corrupt and wealthy the SWC was, it reminds me of how they would have liked nothing better than to stick it to "Arkiesaw".
Thank God we didn't wait around to see how things panned out. Frank knew from experience that the SWC couldn't be trusted.

BTW Hog fans, the next time you're about to jump on me for "flaming Arkansas" know that I just accepted an offer in NCAA 11 to coach the Hogs (coming off a disastrous 2-10 campaign) for the next 3 years, leaving Mississippi State.

I think so. It was really just Arkansas vs. Texas back then, so we really had no say whatsoever in what went on. Arkansas was screwed on a pretty regular basis, and nobody outside of Arkansas even knew about it, much less cared.

they were a charter member back the 1910's. Interestingly:
quote:
The first organizational meeting of the conference was held in May 1914 at the Oriental Hotel in Dallas, Texas. It was chaired by L. Theo Bellmont, who originated the idea for the athletic conference and was at the time athletic director at the University of Texas. Originally, Bellmont wanted Louisiana State University and the University of Mississippi to join the conference as well, but they declined to do so. The Southwest Conference became an official body on December 8, 1914, at a formal meeting at the Rice Hotel in Houston.

SWC originally included OU and OSU way back when. Heading west out of Fayetteville, the terrain flattens out. Via train, it was probably easier to travel to Austin than it would have been to get to BR or Alabama back in the day.
Arkansas, for better or for worse, has always had more in common with Texas and Oklahoma, IMO.
The SWC could have been made into a viable conference at some point had they been willing. Texas arrogance prevented it.
Arkansas almost joined the Big 8 in the 70s.

The Southwestern Bell and Dallas building thing is always fun to look at. As also is the old Phillps Litho softball team.
But the Dean Weber fun was atleast soothing.
But in all seriousness, the worst thing about growing up in NWA was only having 3 home games a year and only seeing a team once every 4th year, except Tulsa.

You are not much of a fan if you could only make the games in Fayetteville. Hell, I used to drive from Jonesboro to Fayetteville for middle of the week basketball games.

I was in grade school. But hey I guess you are only a fan if you go to games.
I guess me staying up after the 10 pm news to watch replays on KFSM were all for nothing.

So, you are saying the old SWC officials were worse to Arkansas than the SEC is to however is playing bama and aubie? How did Arkansas ever win the SWC chmapionship? Hell, UT always has had talent
Let's put it this way: there was a SWC rule that officials who resided or were born in Arkansas could not officiate Arkansas games. However, an official who lived a street over from SMU's campus, one who lived in Austin, and another who was born in Lubbock were all part of the regular conference officiating rotations, without a single restriction upon which games they were considered unbiased enough to officiate.

I'm certainly old enough to remember the SWC days, but I try to block those days out. I concur about Houston, still to this day I don't like them, at all.
We were doomed from the get go in the SWC, the arrogance that was(is)Texas made sure that the conference would never survive. You can see this now with the Big 12-2, except it was much worse back in the SWC as hard as that is to believe.

The worst thing about the SWC wasnt football it was Baseball.
You only had 4 teams in the tourney and had to win the league outright to host it. Of course Texas was blasting people then, but I think in 83 they actually had the tourney under the sun at George Cole.

I can't say I remember feeling anything about Baylor
I'm still PO'd at Baylor for ruining Jason Allen's knee in the snow in Fayetteville, and giving us a 9-5 loss and launching the career of Peanut Adams.
