Pretty dead on, I've always said Georgia and Texas are the two most under achieving programs in the country.

Spot on, especially the shower part.
The football comparison works well. But Purdue people would choke if they ever heard someone compare them to MSU as an academic institution. I think it's fair to say that MSU is an agricultural school with a strong engineering program, and Purdue is an engineering school with a strong agricultural program.

Yup, that is the best comparison. VT has too much recent success, and too little history before its current coach. Plus VT is easily the bigger football brand in their state.

Gophers were the first CFB team with 3 MNC's after Bernie Beirman left his success at Tulane to lead the Gophers. I think they won 3 back to back to back just before WWII and then they never fully recovered after the war. They still won another MNC in the 60's so they have a most impressive football history.
Gophers have also been to an NCAA Final Four which Missouri still has not accomplished.
Gophers are probably a Top 25 academic school while Missouri is more like Top 100
I was really comparing football programs, not academics. The fact that they are both state flagship schools is all I really cared about. And yes, Minnesota won a few MNCs between 1904-1941. Since 75 years ago, the two football programs have a lot of common ground.

This is a great thread because there are many ways of comparing schools: by similar fan bases, by similar academics, by similar athletic success, etc.
I think the best ones so far are:
Georgia/Texas
USC/NC State
AU/Michigan State
Vandy/Northwestern
Another one is Missouri/Maryland - similar athletic success, changes conferences, and neither really fits culturally in their respective conferences
AU/Clemson is too easy

One of things I hate most about Southern culture is wanting to relive the Civil War.

Interesting you brought this up. I work in the Civil Engineering Department and we routinely do a specific type of pavement test that can only be conducted with equipment at MSU or Purdue. Not football related but mildly interesting.

I don't like the Florida and LSU comparisons. Florida has a much longer history of success than Oregon, while LSU doesn't have near the history of Michigan and hasn't fallen nearly as far.
I'd probably go Florida - Michigan, two blue blood programs with unlimited resources who have been embarrassed in recent years by bad hires since Carr/Meyer left.
LSU is unique, possibly Ohio State based on being the only major player in a fertile recruiting ground, sustained success, and the Les Miles era is very similar to the Jim Tressell era.
