I think the biggest thing Saban has done (plus Auburn's title and run a few years ago) has made the top half of the SEC national championship or bust. Going 9-3, beating your rivals and winning a bowl game just isn't going to cut it at Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, etc anymore (once you have an established program in place).

The same thing is about to happen to Ole Miss. Freeze has had a really nice last 2 years, got a big raise and has people excited. If he goes 8-4 and 7-5 the next 2 years I guarantee people start grumbling. Totally because of elevated expectations due to the rest of the league and his own success.

You put Miles in this category and not Sumlin? It's pretty obvious to everyone on our side that the whole fiasco with the "coaching change" has completed neutered Alleva and that Miles has SEVERAL years in front of him.

We've always been told Pat Dye killed Bear.

You guys will have to figure that one out yourselves.

It's not all Saban though. The SEC winning a million straight titles changed everything. The conference wars didn't exist, the SEC wasn't trying to prove anything as a whole. People talk about the possible debacle of 2-loss OM winning the SEC and us not having any Natty contenders, but in the 90s that was pretty normal and we didn't worry about it. I rooted so hard for LSU in 03, it was just cool to see an SEC team there. But the next decade made us expect an SEC team to be there.

Yep. That 2007 game started it even though we crumbled down the stretch, and people forget that the 2008 game was Fulmer and Tennessee's Alamo. They knew it, we knew it, everyone knew it, and we went into Knoxville (with 30-35,000 people in Crimson) and just physically suffocated and wore them out. They lost to South Carolina and Wyoming the next 2 weeks and that was that.

Don't forget Mack Brown and Tommy Bowden....would add Sly Croom as well. Also, put the final nail in Chiz's coffin with that 49-0 blowout

Sorry, I rarely pay attention to aTm/Sumlin.

Sumlin is certainly on the hot seat, but his departure won't be due to the Saban effect.

"Thunder 'N Lightening" were coming to the GaDome to Bama's arse. Julio came on the scene with a great performance and the rest is history. The Dome was rockin that night, I had a fine time.

Richt was more caused by Auburn, LSU and UF winning as much as Bama.

Auburn had nothing to do with Richt's firing. If anything, Auburn was part of the reason he stayed around so long. Richt went 10-5 vs. the backup school, with most being blowout wins.

Richt's record vs. Florida is the #1 thing that got him fired.

Look at a map and see who has won a NC since UGA won theirs in 1980. They were surrounded, minus USC. Now Clemson is close again, UGA fans couldn't take it anymore.

I disagree with you on this. I believe Ole Miss has replaced Auburn in the "current" SEC pecking order. However, since Ole Miss has sucked for so long, their plantation fan base will enjoy their rise to mediocrity for several more years, while not realizing how mediocre 8-4, 9-3, 10-2 really is.

Richt kicked Auburn's arse a ton, and that played a large part in his ability to retain his job at UGA much longer than needed.

LSU/FLA/UA/AU all winning National Championships with new coaches during Richt's tenure were somehow overlooked until the Administration finally had enough and pulled the plug after Bama spanked a highly rated UGA team in Athens back in October.

Richt's record vs. Florida is the #1 thing that got him fired.

Other than the heightened competition and expectations in the SEC that you can attribute partially (if not substantially) to Nick's presence, I think this is what really did Richt in. Dawg fans were already impatient after the decade of getting drubbed in the 90s by Spurrier. When UF was able to recover from the Zook years and meteorically rise under Urban while the Dawgs continued to play second fiddle in the East, Richt's good will among the masses started to slip. Then, UF falls off the cliff under Muschamp, yet UGa didn't capitalize on this period of opportunity. I think that's what finally sunk him.

Meyer removed himself from Florida due to Saban.

Nah.

They weren't even in the same division. I think it was just having to compete in the SEC as a whole without Tebow. He just didn't feel like rebuilding the program and wanted to go some place easier..

Is Saban a big part of why the SEC is so good? Of course. But not the whole reason. The conference made the turn towards dominant before Saban ever got things rolling at Alabama.

Meyer wasn't fired. That's the biggest difference.
