Covington has a lot of positives and the lake area of Mandeville is very nice but I also like Madisonville as well. As for my top spot, it is hard to beat the waterfront in Natchitoches for a small town in Louisiana. I really liked Hot Springs alot. Athens was my favorite town for a road trip. Hermann looks cool in Mizzou.

Agreed, Natchitoches is a great town. I was up there last week and enjoyed it as always.

Auburn is a very nice small town.
No, not that one, the one in California.
Seriously, the motherlode area of California is awesome. I recommend it to all of you who enjoy small towns with a touch of the old West and beautiful scenery to boot.
Oh, and I'm not from California, though. I guess I screwed up the OP request.

Oxford. By default really. South MS is trashy, and the Delta, uh, no comment on what's turned those towns to shite holes. The rest of the state is too back woodsy for the most part.

Hattiesburg is a pretty cool town IMO.

Love Fairhope, Mtn. View and St. Augustine (especially at Christmastime).
In Texas (mostly in Central Texas):
Central Texas/Near Austin and/or San Antonio:
Fredericksburg
New Braunfels/Gruene
Wimberley
Georgetown
Dallas/Fort Worth:
Granbury (near Dallas/Fort Worth)
Grapevine (also near Dallas/Fort Worth)
Houston:
? Sorry, I've spent most of my life here (born and raised in the Houston metro area) and I really can't think of any small towns in this area that would be considered nice...maybe Old Town Spring?

Mooresville.

As much of my life has been spent within 40 miles of the Missouri border, I know surprisingly little about the state of Missouri. I've only been to Springfield and St. Louis for one day each with work. I've only ever driven through Kansas City. I've been to Branson twice.
I've been to Noel and Jane a few times, but that's the most.
I know much more about Oklahoma and tons more about Texas. I need to come up for the game this year.

New Iberia, LA
Far enough from Lafayette to where you won't get infected by USL, but close enough so you can drive through USL if you are depressed and want to feel better about your life.
Only downside - St. Martinville

These are all solid. I'd add Kerrville, Boerne, Marble Falls and Dripping Springs to the list, though Boerne is becoming more of a suburb. The old part of a Boerne with the town center is still cool though with all the local shops and biergartens

There really aren't many good ones in the Houston metro. Within close driving distance I'd put Brenham, CS and Bryan in there. Though I don't know if many on here would consider CS and Bryan small towns with 90k+ plus people, they're just small compared to the Houston metro nearby
Montgomery isn't bad either actually. Very small town but has a nice restored town center and some nice homes on lots of land outside of it

Natchez is pretty nice. Lots of the small towns in the area are, for that matter.
