I think South Carolina is a lock because there is doubt who the 8th team is. If two national seeds came open, I have no idea who would get it.
But I do believe television time slots will play a factor in the 8th spot. Its what has driven this format since 1999 - every single Super Regional game on the ESPN networks.
1999: 2 West Coast National Seeds
2000: 2
2001: 3
2002: 1 (#8 Stanford, controversial)
2003: 2
2004: 2
2005: 2
2006: 1
2007: 2
2008: 2
2009: 3
2010: 2
2011: 0 (but ended up having Cal as a Super Regional host)
2012: 2
2013: 3
2014: 1
2015: 1

These are pretty much your national seeds in some shape or fashion. The only two that are interchangeable is SC and Virginia. Only way LSU would slide in is if SC went 0-2 and LSU won the tournament.
No team out west will get a national seed. You can take that to the bank.

Will be something, all SEC/ACC other than Texas Tech (who would be the 4th best team in either division of SEC, at best)

The SEC will get at least 4 national seeds. Could get 5 if LSU, Ole Miss or Vandy get into the championship game of the SEC Tournament. The SEC will also get 7 host sites: Florida, A & M, Miss. State, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy and LSU. Records for one league will be broken this year. The top 7 teams in the SEC have never been as good as they are this year.

SEC won't get 5 national seeds even though they are deserving. They also won't get 7 regional spots.

So traditionally the top 8 of this list are chosen as the national seeds?
No. Traditionally we have had several double digit national seeds.

I don't see any way around seven hosts. Unless Vandy or someone is a one seed at coastal or something like that. You can't hide those seven resumes.

North Carolina had a losing conference record and missed the ACC tourney they aren't a host candidate

I wouldn't say several. The last several years there have been 1 or 2.

Texas Tech is getting one. That's happening. Probably Virginia too as they are red hot. The Virginia slot is the only one that's likely up for grabs. I think if any of LSU, Ole Miss, Vandy, NC State or Florida State were to win their conference tournament they would get serious consideration for it. I do not believe any other team is in the mix.

With their tradition, if LSU wins the Tourney they will be in the running for a NS.

Curious as to why Vandy's RPI is higher than LSU's?

Has The SEC Champion ever not been a national seed?
Posted on 5/23/16 at 7:59 pm to BBATiger
Do you know the formula? It's 25% winning%, 50% opponents winning%, & 25% opponent's opponents winnng%. Plus bonuses & penalties for road wins & home losses.
