There is only one SEC team in the top 8. That says a lot about how tough our conference has been the last 40 years.

Maybe.

If you justify that by looking into out of conference results and quality of opponents played.

Its all about National Titles and not consistancy.

It's hard to make the list when you have to vacate like 50 wins. Also, all of the teams on that list outside of Georgia has played against mediocre competition. Nebraska in particular stands out. The Big Eight was a complete joke. Oklahoma was the only team that posed a challenge and they lost to OU more times than not. Against elite OOC competition, Nebraska got completely owned. Miami and Florida State destroyed them in the Orange Bowl every year. So win total is not really an accurate of a team's overall quality.

Top 10 with 6 National Titles. That's top 2 resume for that time frame.

I'll still never understand the logic of alabama getting a split 78 championship with USC after losing at home to them. USC had a better record, beat them at home by ten points, and played a harder schedule. Just one of those opinion poll results I guess. Before last year tOSU never would have gotten a shot

Because 2 weeks later USC lost by two TD's to Arizona State. During the poll era all that mattered was when you lost. Not who you lost to. Had USC beaten ASU Bama doesnt win the AP title that year and USC is unanimous national champs but they blew a game to a nobody.

AND Bama had the best win. 14-7 over number 1 Penn State.
USC won the Rose Bowl on a play where everyone is America saw Charles White fumble before he crossed the goal line. USC digressed as much as anyone in the ocountry the last 6 weeks of the season. Nobody beats Bama at the end of 1978. PSU was being hailed as maybe the best team EVER prior to Jan 1. But the biggest reason is Bama didnt lose again after USC did.

I know you miss the shitass big 8 when you had one tough game a year. Lol
Osborne and Stwitzer were guaranteed 9 wins to start.

Yeah, the epic stupidity and stubbornness of week by week ranking systems

For as much success as Alabama has on the football field over the decades, I am shocked they are not on the list....

Alabama officially has 338 wins between 1975 and 2014. When you add back in the forfeitures and the vacations, that amount increases to 367 wins. Which, if added back in, would move us all the way up to #2 behind Nebraska.

We forfeited 8 games in 1993, vacated 10 wins in 2005, 6 wins in 2006, and 5 wins in 2007. That's 29 victories, won on the field, stripped retroactively away from us.

When on-the-field wins are included, Alabama is the second winningest college football program over the last 40 years.

Bama is #10, even with the 30 wins vacated and forfeited during that time period. In fact, Bama would be #2 on that list with 368 wins with the forfeit/vacated wins.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but does this statistic account for Penn State's vacated wins?

No, the NCAA restored Penn State's wins.

But they had a far worse loss. Their loss was to an unranked conference opponent by almost two touchdowns. Alabama also had a much tougher schedule.

Alabama's first 5 opponents of the '78 season were as follows:

vs. #10 Nebraska
@ #11 Missouri
vs. #7 USC
vs. Vanderbilt
@ Washington

They also played #10 LSU in the second to last game of the regular season.

And then Alabama, ranked #2 in both major polls, beat #1 Penn State in post-season play.

USC also squeaked by Alabama in the Coaches Poll voting by the hair on their chinny-chin-chin. The AP vote the next day wasn't close at all.

The fact that Alabama played two Top 15 opponents in consecutive weeks, while USC played two cream puffs, might have contributed to Bama's poor play against USC in that game. 'Bama was tired after two physical games against good competition. USC was well-rested after playing the likes of unranked Texas Tech and unranked Oregon.

They weren't gonna have a repeat of what happened the year prior when ND (who lost to 5-6 Ole Miss) was #1 over Alabama (who lost to top 10 Nebraska).

Yet Bama has as many NC's during that period as the rest of the SEC COMBINED.

so bama's won 8 national titles since 1975? Cause that's how many I count for the rest of the sec during that time:

UF-3 ('96,'06,'08)
LSU-2 ('03,'07)
Uga-1 (1980)
Auburn-1 (2010)
Tenn-1 (1998)
