See, I know alot of people want to beleive this, but it just isnt true 99% of the time. I am an accountant for a huge company, and our headquarters are in New York. My local office in Nashville has people from every SEC school you can imagine. Our international controller in New York and all the other big wigs sees all of us the exact freaking same, even though UF has a very highly regarded accounting program. It will help if you want to get into a grad school up north, but for an actual employer it just doesnt

That's why I said it depends on the field and nature of the employer. We are not all accountants working for a huge company.

its really regional outside of a few fields. another example, architecture, Auburn is one of the top programs in the country, but I can tell you for a fact the New York office of HOK(one of the largest firms in the world) Auburn isnt even on their radar, however their Atlanta office is the opposite

I wouldn't go quite that far.

A UF degree (and to a lesser extent, UGA and A&M) will probably get you further here in the Chicago business community than the others, though I fully recognize that the difference is comparatively small.

UF has a huge Alumni base in Chicago.

It's not just that - they're more of a known quantity, and a lot more people in the Midwest and Northeast who have relatives or friends whose kids went to UF than elsewhere in the SEC.

I'm in management consulting here, and for the most part it's what you'd expect (Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, some Ivies, Illinois, some randoms like Cal and Texas), but I have run across some UF grads in the field here, including a pretty good friend of mine. Have yet to run across grads of anywhere else besides Vandy.

My girlfriend works for the HOK office in Atlanta. She went to GA Tech though (She thinks highly of the architecture program at Auburn. She does not like the one at Clemson though).

SunHog, what are your thoughts on the Walton MBA program? Really looking into applying there when I finish up at LSU. Seems like a legitimate national brand

Are you wanting to head into a startup, work for a F500 or just stay in the region (Mid-South/Southeast) after graduate school?

I dont think people realize how differently colleges are viewed up north or out west. There are just so many small private schools up there that we all are just branded as Sports.

almost all schools are lumped into a few categories outside of a few and the regional schools.

I've heard continuously that you want to have 5 years or so under your belt with at least one F500 company to take notes.

LSU has really strong networks in Dallas and Houston, so realistically I see myself in Texas. At the rate NW Arkansas is growing, I wouldn't mind ending up there in about 10 years

People comment on my lack of southern drawl when I tell them I am from Mississippi. Especially if they are from the Northeast. That's generally when I spit my chaw at them.

Oh..

If you will be working in SCM (Supply Chain Management) it's a Top 5 MBA program. All because of Walmart who has dominated and completely transformed the SCM structure.

If that is your route, do not hesitate because the price point won't be beat and your only other options would be MIT or Stanford. I have a feeling you want to stay close to home and for much less money and enjoy the experience of Fayetteville.

I am not a homebody by any means, but I am just being realistic about my best opportunities to land a good job in a good city with an LSU degree.

I am probably going to get my auditing certification from LSU, as it's #1 in the country by a mile. A lot of people just use it as a foot in the door to major companies. I know a lot fo LSU alums become CIO's and CFO's from their experience. Just keeping my options open really

thanks for the feedback

Sam Walton has the #1 MBA F500 placement. Doesn't hurt (Walmart, Tyson, JB Hunt, Acumen) happen to be 15 miles away.

It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to live in Dallas or Ark/LA but not get another degree from LSU (Same thing I thought about Arkansas years ago for my MBA) then head to the Hill and enjoy yourself.

Texas, Arkansas or Louisiana companies will gladly accept a Walton MBA student. It carries serious national weight in SCM as I posted prior.

Let's put it this way.. One of my certificate programs at Stanford was discussing SCM at Walmart and the professors are very aware of Walton MBA students and are impressed with the program.

P.S. I am not a SCM guy either. Just trying to give you perspective.
