Well, in his case it is. So taking offense to it makes zero sense.
Ding ding ding... Quintana struggling with the concept of an individual life vs. what's good "in theory". Seems about right for SJWU.

well, until programs are in place to successfully integrate tigers into the wild, that is incorrect.

You'd think a person had been diagnosed with cancer on here.
FWIW I'm more sad to hear about Roscoe being diagnosed with cancer than I am about most people.

Condolences for your tiger.

There is a picture out there of former LSU player Marcus Spears, a good 6'7" tall standing next to the glass & Mike is standing up in the inside, and Mike is almost towering over him. But what is really so amazing is that as big & strong as he is, his speed is hard to believe, watching him run & jump all over his cage. Kind of gives you the shivers to picture this huge beast chasing you...for a few seconds anyway. And FWIW: no wild animal eats as good as Mike or gets anywhere close to the great medical care Mike gets.

We've had 6 Mikes since 1935.
One of them lived almost 20 years.

Great pic of Mike and Les.

Everybody loves Ole Les, even Roscoe.

This place could f*ck up a cup of coffee. Are opponents and fans of fellow-conference members really choosing this thread to argue and bicker with people about big cats in captivity, release rate success, and other mindless, off-topic chatter that has nothing to do with a tragic diagnosis for a revered animal that has done nothing to deserve something like this inflicting pain?
Yes...They are.
Only on tSECr...

That's nonsense.
I get it. You guys are going to defend the process, and I understand why but quit trying to justify it with anything more than you think its cool to have a live Tiger
1. Mike is not a normal Bengal tiger.
He's not even 100% Bengal. He's a mix of Siberian and Bengal.
2. Because he's a mix he's actually sterile. So in the wild he couldn't reproduce.
3. Tigers are being hunted to extinction in the wild.
3. Captive tigers live 10-12 yrs longer than tigers in the wild. Unless China breeds them to harvest just their penis. frick China and Cancer.

Goddamnit. Mike's got the same kind of cancer that took my domestic cat. I HATE CANCER.

A breeding and rehabilitation program was done years ago to reestablish a hand full of South China tigers to the rigors of the wilderness. They were transported from a China zoo to a reserve in South Africa. That is the only case I know of where tigers were actually born in captivity, then released under the guidance of rangers to live off wild quarry.
I have no idea to the current status or how successful it was, but the ultimate plan was to reestablish a wild population in the Yangtze valley of south China. They are extinct in the wild currently. Chinese poachers have been responsible for the extinction of their own native tiger subspecies in the wild.
These poachers are killing tigers in other countries for their penises and bones, also. In Malaysia anti-poaching task forces have been given legal authority to shoot to kill.

fricking PETA gonna try to keep us from getting another Tiger if he happens to pass
After recently spending ~$11M on a habitat designed explicitly to cater to the needs of a large carnivorous feline, LSU will tell PETA (in so many words) to frick all the way off.
