NFL is a better gig. No recruiting, awesome pension. If you get fired from one team, you get hired by another.

Mike Shula was Alabama's Butch Jones. Kept games close and competitive but never could win a meaningful game. Had one decent season surrounded by nothing but mediocre seasons.

I bet he is/has. I think that he would rather stay in the NFL for the rest of his career.
Good NFL money and a lot less stress. Who could blame him?

He was too laid back at Bama. You could see him trying to make decisions on the sidelines, but it just didn't come naturally to him. He may have been thrown into the deep end of the pool too quickly due to his blood line. He might actually be mature enough now to be a better head coach.

Shula is an NFL guy. He doesn't have that "personality" that gets an assistant noticed i.e. Belichick, Mike Ditka, Buddy Ryan, Romeo, on and on. Mike is a good football mind but not an engaging person. Very quiet. Nothing like his father. David had the same problem.

My perception on Mike Shula has changed over the years (being a good team again helps, I guess). He took a job that no one wanted, and we were literally out of options. Who knows what would have happened if he said no. Spring practice was over by the time he was hired.
All in all I think he did an ok job of minimizing the damage. When you hire a guy like Shula, you're just hoping to slow the bleeding. He got us from Fran/Mike Price to Saban without becoming Vandy, so I guess that's a plus.

Much respect for Shula from me. We were in the darkest days in the history of this program. Mama called and he answered. He didn't win anything special but he kept us from being sucked into the black hole. Before he left he recruited a lot of very good players who would go on to be crucial on Saban's early teams. Nothing but respect for what he did for us.

Shula did a pretty incredible job given the scholarship limitations and injuries we faced while he was here.
That being said he had no concept of how to handle college athletes and that's a weakness he hasn't fixed in the NFL.

Yep. There's a reason top college coordinators make more than nfl coordinators.I don't think any coordinator in the NFL make a million.

when Saban retires at Bama I wouldn't mind having him as our coach, especially now with all the NFL experience.

Who else wanted the Bama job in May 2003 that would have been a better choice than Shula?

Well first off that was not what he said. He said a "job literally no one wanted and we were out of options." Sly Croom wanted it for damn sure. Second, Mal Moore stupidly limited the choices to Bama alums only because he thought the Mike Price situation was caused in part by Price not understanding how much in the spotlight he was. The options were then limited to Croom, Shula, Richard Williamson and Mike Riley. Croom Willamson and Shula all wanted the job bad. Riley had already turned the job down. So the notion that no one wanted the job is blatantly false. Alabama damn sure could have hired an innovative guy like Norm Chow, Randy Shannon or Jimbo Fisher in 2002 had Coach Moore not limited his options

I appreciate Shula for what he did at Bama and seeing us through a difficult period. I don't think I am prepared for him to be back at the helm anytime soon.

He was a pretty good coach and recruiter at Bama why is he not getting more interest in some of these vacant head coaching jobs in college football.
That's a good question. He was so close to snatching Tebow. Had that happened, I don't think he would have been fired from UA.

Too much like his fellow coaching legacy Doolander, 2 deer in the headlights
