Meyer: Saban is not the greatest coach ever but he is in the top two or three

This September, Saban called Meyer “the best” coach in football.

Meyer, the current coach at Ohio State, recently told GridironNow.com’s Buddy Martin that Saban, who just won his fifth national title, is “one of the greatest in the history of college football,” but stopped short of calling him the greatest.

“I don’t want to say ‘the best’,” Meyer said. “One of the top two or three.”

Meyer has been paying attention to Saban’s recent work; specifically, the successful onside kick call in this month’s national title game and the Crimson Tide’s hiring of offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

“I think what he’s done on offense with Kiffin was impressive,” Meyer said. “He has really adapted. And that’s the key to being a great football coach. Adapting, moving forward and keeping on moving and understanding momentum — which he does.”

The subtle Meyer vs. Saban rivalry continues.

Meyer would be winning in similar fashion at Bama. Him and Saban are both the best of the best.

Saban is better than Meyer, but after the two of them there is a huge drop off.

Took a lot of heart for Urbs to make that statement

Don't know you could say one is any better than the other. Meyer is way ahead of where Saban was at the same stage of his career.

Agree, but having Tim Tebow at one school and 3 NFL QBs on one roster at another helps a ton.

That's not to say he didn't earn it, he absolutely did. He's a fantastic coach, and extremely young with three titles. Wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't end up with more titles than Saban just based off where he is now and his age. That's assuming he doesn't go to the NFL or something.

Come on man that's ridiculous. He recruits and coaches those guys. It ain't like Tebow is Cam Newton or something. Urban made Tebow it wasn't the other way around.

Again, those guys aren't special QB talents they are great athletes playing in a perfect system for them. They won't translate to the pros. The system makes them that's why they are so easy to replace.

You know what also helps a ton. Having significantly more talent on your roster than every team you play every single game every single year. Is Saban not that good of a coach because he only wins with #1 recruiting classes every year?

Can anyone really argue that Meyer left the SEC because he knew he couldn't consistently beat Saban? That has to count for something.

I used to think it was really close, but I think there is a bit of a gap now. I think Saban is noticeably better than Meyer.

Saban would win the BIG every single year now. Part of that has to do with matchups.

Urban went to a Conference where he'd only have 1 or two big games every year.

He's a good Coach but slimy as hell.

Its a pretty even rivalry- they both have similarily difficult roads to a title-- Bama has a harder schedule but can lose a game and still make it, while OSU has to be perfect (seriously, Meyer's a prick but his record since arriving at OSU is kind of insane- his worst year they ended with two losses and made a BCS game; every other season had 1 or 0 losses-- unless Harbaugh turns things around quickly OSU under Meyer could threaten what I thought was a basically untouchable record- the FSU run from like 87 to 01 where they finished top 5 every single year).

Urb won't be at OSU long enough to even come close to that record.

Saban made him quit. Meyer knows it.

If this like how Belicheck ran Saban out of the NFL? What with Saban knowing he'd have to play for the Wild Card each season at best?

What changed your mind? The fact that Arkansas converted a 4th and 25 lateral in overtime in a game alabama wasn't even playing in?

Saban has lost two years in a row to Ole Miss there is no way you can say he would win the Big Ten every year. Meyer has lost 2 I think 2 Big Ten games in 4 years a Ohio State taking over a team on probation. Saban isn't doing any better than that.

The national championship game was one of the best called games I have seen in years. Saban has a feel for the game like very few and knows when he needs to make the right calls. That onside kick call was brilliant and what won the game for Bama IMO. Saban has occomplished more and has had the most talent with back to back to back no.1 classes in recruiting. He is best college coach right now. As for as best college coach ever IDK I guess it depends on what all the measurables are that would be taken into consideration so I get what he's saying.

He has 1.5 more and he's 13 years older.
