I think he's a heck of a player, and I've enjoyed watching him, but this is a douche move.

I don't know. Won't ever know, because there aren't any McCarron or Mettenberger T-shirts or jerseys being sold (outside of sites like Cafe Press, which is impossible to control). Again, why is that?

It was hypothetical. Maybe you can understand it more if I just said what if JFF played for bama instead of aTm and he was doing the same thing?

Lol TAMU fans are white knighting their asses off ITT

I don't see the problem. We all know the hottest seller on campus is the jars of "Johnny Football Jizz."

The Vaughn douche was spamming his shite among all the idiots on texags after about the 3rd week of the season, so I doubt this was cooked up.

Didn't the fans invent this name? I don't believe that Manziel invented the name to begin with, so is he stealing it?

I'm pretty sure it was coined by a Texas HS sports writer. Regardless, copyright owners are simply those who own copyrights--not always the originators.

Good find. The no-it-ain't-an-eligibility-problem posters will enjoy this quote:

quote:

LSU is sending out a "cease and desist" letter to let merchants know selling anything that bears a "honey badger" print and/or Mathieu's name, initials or jersey number "is in violation of NCAA bylaw 12.5 and could have a negative impact on the involved student-athlete's eligibility."

Excerpt from the article:

quote:

"What the NCAA told us is, because it's so popular now in terms of his nickname with his name, people will know that immediately," LSU Compliance Director Jayson Santos said.

This is exactly the point that is being made, you all are trying to make this a JFF trying to get paid point and its not, its a compliance issue.

The spotlight has turned ole Johnny Football into a douche. I have no respect for him now, and hope he gets teabagged by Bama in week 2.

I don't know. I'd probably think he was a douche. But I already think that over the Hook'em picture. He's my douche, though.

It does really seem like a douche move on the surface, but I would bet it's been laid out as a necessary course of action regarding his eligibility. A little more backlash in order to CYA is worth it.

The only people agreeing with this decision are aTm fans for the most part. General consensus = stupid move by JFF and aTm

But don't you understand? That very fact clinches the argument for JFF and TAMU.

I can say with certainty, I am measurably dumber for having read the responses in this thread--mostly all of which are divorced from anything resembling reason.

I can't even bring myself to draft a substantive response to most of these posts. I just don't know how to effectively communicate with someone who's starting from the basic premise that enjoining others from profiting off your name and likeness necessarily makes you a douche.

It's a compliance issue. The university is required to ensure that no one makes money off of any student-athlete or their likeness.

Call him a douche if you want -> 0 fricks given.

But know that it's something that must be regulated by the university at the very least. As you can see by now, the same thing happened with Mathieu.. and he wasn't even the originator of the 'honey badger' fad.

Because "Johnny Football" *isn't* his name?

The odds of him being eligible next season are dropping so fast it probably isn't worth him wasting time on.

Doucher. Wow

Why? Because TAMU doesn't want to be out of NCAA compliance?
This is starting to become an issue of folks believing every Tweet, Facebook post, message board post they come across. It's easy to become caught up in the misguided hype that's being created.
Johnny isn't the one stalking himself, taking photos of every f'n step he takes and/or writing stories about every thing he does. He's actually a humble guy. The out-of-control mania is largely media and opponent-driven.
