I bought into the "greatest division in the history of college football" talk midway through the season when almost the entire West was ranked, and then that started to slip away, leading to the top 5 teams in the West all losing their bowl games.
Wouldn't that lead to the idea that maybe the schedules really did play a role in the downward trend of the teams as the season wound down?

Crazy how much Gus' tenure is starting to mirror Chizik's. Get a case of the big head then can't sustain success.

Or it could mean that post season rankings are more telling than preseason rankings.

I'd agree with that concept if the top 5 teams in the West hadn't shite the bed in their bowl games, and Georgia, SC and UF (not West, but still) hadn't lost their season-ending OOC rivalry games.

ETA: and Malzahn seems to be making excuses for the entire conference, not his team in particular.

I don't disagree. Ole Miss was a shell of the team it was at the beginning of the season by the end of the season. Playing in the SEC West means your players get hurt.

I agree with this.

The 7 in row thing was always blown out of proportion. If you look back at it only Auburn and Alabama (once) ever played a team with a chance of beating the SEC team.

I guess, but saying only y'all and bama played a team w a chance against the SEC is still a credit to the conference.
It's still pretty impressive regardless, especially when you look at how spread out the championships are among the others.

Of course Gus is whining, he lost 4 SEC games last year and 4 out of his last 5 last games overall. He also wants an 8 team playoff so he can sneak in there with 2 or 3 losses because he knows his first year was fluky as hell.

I do believe the streak did force other schools to step up though. Look at the increase in head coaching, assistant coaching salaries and efforts in recruiting.

We were +7 dogs to Ohio State.
