so are you admitting that Saban is also a whiner?

ETA: and Malzahn seems to be making excuses for the entire conference, not his team in particular. Pretty weak, but he was baited into giving an answer that would have come out sounding like an excuse, regardless of what he said. Only thing he could have said to avoid making some sort of an excuse would be saying that the SEC was just not as good as advertised. I don't think that would have gone over great either

I clicked the link and I read that Nick Saban was making excuses for losing a playoff game and Gus Malzahn was whining because the SEC beats up on itself, and somehow in your mind, you interpreted that as Gus making excuses for losing a bowl game?

No, the opposite actually. When the SEC won 7 straight national titles, the strength of the league was cited as a reason for the victories.

Now Malzahn is trying to use the strength of the league as a reason for losing.

Well the SEC didn't have a problem with post season prior to Missouri winning the east. Looks like the Auburn and Alabama defeats the past two seasons were because of the Mizzou physicality.

Apparently, I don't know what whining is.

Honestly, I agree with him.

Take two teams of about equal talent levels (Alabama and OSU).

One runs through a very easy Big 10, the other has to play the incredibly tough SEC West.

OSU still deserved to win that game, of that I have NO DOUBT. I am just mildly curious if they could have run the same week in / week out gauntlet of an SEC West team.

At SEC media days earlier this month, Alabama's Nick Saban took to the podium and complained about the NFL's draft calendar, which returns draft grades to players prior to most major bowl games.

"We had six guys in this situation this past year and 11 the year before," he said. "So we're trying to get ready for a game, and all of a sudden, a guy finds out he's a first-round draft pick or a guy that thought he was a first-round draft pick finds out he's not a first-round draft pick, and we're trying to get ready to play a playoff game."

Is that an excuse? It certainly got portrayed as one nationally. The truth is that it can be part excuse, part complaint and part political stance at the same time. However you viewed Saban's comments, though, it's pretty silly to give players their draft grades prior to the College Football Playoff.

kind of like Oregon every year. And why no one ever respected Boise St when they were coasting through seasons for years

Malzhan is "different" from most college HC's. he doesn't look like one, he certainly doesn't act like on the sidelines and he doesn't sound like one. he just looks like a nerd.

BUT, when did any of that matter? Malzhan is a damn good football coach.

stereotypical thinking is alive and well and, alas, always will be.

During the streak, the tough SEC schedule made them "battle tested." Now it makes them weaker?

did Malzahn say the SEC made them battle tested? Who, in particular, actually said that?

While I agree... The SEC better bring home tha trophy or they could be right. Maybe we're getting caught slipping. And yes.... I know... AU lost with 13 seconds to go when it started to feel like we might absolutely blow them away until the kick return

That's what the media does. There is some bandwagon they jump on until the horses die, then they jump on the next one that passes. And so on.

The performance of the SEC in the bowls was blown way out of proportion. Yes, the Miss schools stunk up the joint, especially OM, but the other three losses were what they were. Auburn and LSU lost by FGs to pretty good teams, and Alabama ran into a buzz saw in Ohio St. They were just clicking on all cylinders at the right time. And they lost by one score. Everybody acts like they were blown out.
