Any given "Saturday" any team can win. All you have to do is get to the big dance. For all we know Arkansas could have made noise in the CFP last year the way they ended.
Are there any teams in the SEC west that could hang with VT?
For all we know Ohio state would have 3 losses in the SEC West during the regular season yet could still be the "best" team in the country.
It's a long season and different teams peak at different times. Hell, LSU beats wisconsin, gets trounced by Auburn, then Wisconsin beats auburn.
All I know is id expect ohio state to be a part of the playoff for the near future until Harbaugh gets Michigan rolling, Meyer seems to have the Big 10 figured out.

OSU still deserved to win that game, of that I have NO DOUBT. I am just mildly curious if they could have run the same week in / week out gauntlet of an SEC West team.

The 7 in row thing was always blown out of proportion. If you look back at it only Auburn and Alabama (once) ever played a team with a chance of beating the SEC team.
I do believe the streak did force other schools to step up though. Look at the increase in head coaching, assistant coaching salaries and efforts in recruiting.

Auburn's Gus Malzahn is now the SEC's new "whiner."
Just admit what the rest of us already know....you are just not very smart.

Not only is Gus a whiner, but he's killing football with his hurry-up offensive philosophy.

I'm not arguing against tSEC being the best overall conference, but of all the years to pull out the tough conference schedule argument, last year was about the worst season to do so.

Well he killed the SEC NC streak. The SEC is 0 for 2 with him in the league as a head coach...

Is this what you've come to, Bama fans? This?
Getting a little defensive, aren't you?

why is that? the entire division was bowl eligible. i don't believe that's ever happened before

Meh, I can't stand Malzahn, but I didn't see any excuses or whining in there. Isn't having the toughest league in the country something we pride ourselves on?
BTW, I do somewhat agree with him. If you're an SEC team you're at a bit of a physical disadvantage if you play a slate full of tough conference games and a conference championship game, and then have to get up for two games in a playoff all while drawing a team like tOSU who played a schedule full of creampuffs.

Auburn's Malzahn told me he thinks SEC at disadvantage in CFP because of strength of the league. Others fresher for playoff as result.

CFP for Bama fan means College Football Playoff... he was defending Bama... Does not mention Auburn's bowl game....
Bama Logic (oxymoron)

What does bowl eligible really mean these days? Ohio State was bowl eligible in 2011 and we were terrible.

Crapping the bed in big bowl games didn't help. I'm as big of an SEC homer as the next guy, but last year's bowl showing was horrendously embarrassing.
The only SEC team to play a decent opponent with an similar record in their bowl game and win it was Georgia.

when all 7 teams are bowl eligible, it means something when you have to play every single one of those teams. no, all those teams aren't great, but none of them are complete pushovers. when you play a team like that every single weekend, yes it does make a difference and it can wear you down physically after a 12 game regular season. in a vacuum, being bowl eligible doesn't make you great. But having all 7 teams in one division being bowl eligible is impressive. If it's not, why has that never happened before?

Could be a multitude of reasons.
-Less great teams, more evenly played good teams
-A weak SEC East leading to easy West crossover victories
-Weak OOC games, padding the W-L records
-Seems like it gets easier to make a bowl as the years go on
Again, I still think tSEC was the best overall conference last year, but about as weak as I can ever remember it being(I'm only 27).

you have a short memory then.
2009: Alabama was the only team with 10 wins after bowl season.
2008: Alabama again was only team in SEC with 10 wins, and only two teams won more than 8 games
2007: same as 2008 but replace Alabama with LSU
2006: three West teams had losing records
2005: three west teams lost 7 or more games
2004: only two West teams won more than 6 games
I think you get the point

I sure hope that none of the posters here that are defending our poor bowl showing are the ones who, in other threads, said that they hated all the other SEC schools and hoped they all lost their OOC and bowl games.

I can agree with this.
I bought into the "greatest division in the history of college football" talk midway through the season when almost the entire West was ranked, and then that started to slip away, leading to the top 5 teams in the West all losing their bowl games.

He's talking about the entire SEC being weaker last year, not just the West.

I don't like Alabama, but I really do like that Nick Saban Bear Bryant sig!

Crazy how much Gus' tenure is starting to mirror Chizik's. Get a case of the big head then can't sustain success.
