I think things have changed in recent years for Vandy but nonetheless I'd still go with your "combine #3 and #2." When you get away from the West End or central/downtown Nashville generally and out into any of the suburbs I really never felt like Vandy was in the least way distinguishable from any other SEC school in terms of number of bumper stickers etc you might see. Bottom line is its a numbers game, Vandy is just way way smaller than those other schools and hasn't usually had near as many non-alum fans follow them either, though their local basketball following has always been fairly solid. But also the other problem for Vandy is sooo many of their students come from other states and a lot of them promptly leave and go back off to other states after they graduate rather than settling in or around Nashville.
...err, umm, I mean, not that I'd know anything about that. Ahem.

Texas obviously, but it's a strange sports town because they have alumni from major schools (Auburn, UNC, Michigan, Washington, etc.) across the country move in and automatically start rooting for UT almost as much as their own school.

You see a lot of Bama gear in Nashville and you see Blue Raider gear as well.

Yeah Murfreesboro is actually a really nice little town I enjoyed it, campus was simple but homey...though I don't remember why the hell I was there, been long time.
I wonder if the amount of Belmont gear around town has risen since they've kinda gotten to be a pretty damn good basketball program? Belmont-Lipscomb is the best rivalry nobody knows about, if you're a Lipscomb student with a strong arm you can practically throw stuff at your rival's campus from your own dorm.

Houston: A&M has the biggest fanbase, followed by Texas and LSU
Dallas: Very OU heavy, with TCU and Texas having a very strong presence as well. Not a lot of A&M.
Austin: Duh
Brazos Valley: Duh
San Antonio: VERY Texas heavy area due to the Hispanic t-shirt fans
Panhandle: Tech and OU
West Texas: Tech and Texas
East Texas: LSU and A&M, but most of the HS coaches are Texas fans and so they funnel a ton of their talent there

You think so? I feel like DFW varies a great deal based on where you are in the area. I always see tons of Tech and A&M shite in downtown Fort Worth compared to UT for instance, but much more UT shite in Uptown

Austin is an unusually large city to not have any pro sports team and Texas essentially functions as the uniting athletic event in a town without any other ticket to be had.

I grew up in DFW and I don't remember very many stores at all that carried A&M gear, but they all carry Texas, TCU and OU stuff. I was always one of the only kids who liked A&M at school and always heard the Aggie jokes.
I NEVER got the impression that any part of Dallas was A&M heavy.

I've quite deliberately not been to a t-sip game for, gosh, probably 3 years now, sometimes social gatherings dictate that I have to go but I wear Mizzou stuff when I do. The Big 12 divorce was so nasty that I couldn't even wear Mizzou stuff to tailgates anymore in 2012 without asinine comments from random drunk dudes. Whatever. I did try to for sure get along with the t-sip fans when I first moved here but I also figured out VERY quickly that A&M fans as a group were a lot classier, more friendly, good sports, all that stuff. Hokey as it sounds its very much true. When I went to CS for games Aggies would invite us into their homes, hold doors for us, etc, win or lose. At t.u. games? Child please.

UF, FSU, UGA, Bama, Auburn, Miami. Pretty much in that order. After that its a healthy dose of just about every SEC school save for Vandy and Mizzou. Also quite a bit of Ohio State, Michigan and Mich State.

Yeah, it seems like A&M, Tech, and Texas run things down here with OU and OSU having a fair share of fans as well. And surprisingly I've seen quite a few Arkansas alums here too.
I've never really noticed any geographical correlations within DFW but yeah, Uptown does seem to have a ton of Texas alums.
TCU is obviously drowned out by just about everyone here though.

When I read the OP I knew this argument would spring up eventually
The truth is, when TN is winning in football a ton of Univ of Memphis fans put on their orange hats and jackets and then put on blue sweatshirts and beads once basketball season starts... But since TN has been so bad lately they wear their Tiger Blue year round... So lame.
There are definitely more OM fans in Memphis than Vol fans by the way.
