What does everyone expect from Steele this season? He improved Auburn's defense across the board in 2016 after their lackluster 2015 campaign with Champ at DC. What did y'all notice from him in 2016 that was different than before? How does he compare to the other SEC DCs?

I think he's on the way to redeeming himself as a DC. He had a rough time at Clemson and then at LSU but things are looking up for him. Auburn seems to be a good fit for him with him being in his home state and with a very talent rich-football program. He runs somewhat of a hybrid defense which I think can benefit Auburn with their lack of bonafide pass rushers this year.

Some stats for reference:

Auburn opponents ppg:

Overall

2015: 26.0

2016: 17.1

vs SEC

2015: 28.6

2016: 18.4

Sacks per game:

2015: 1.46

2016: 1.92

Yards per rush attempt vs Auburn D:

2015: 4.54

2016: 3.74

Yards per pass attempt vs Auburn D:

2015: 6.3

2016: 6.4

TFL per game:

2015: 4.08

2016: 6.39

The only stat that remained constant was opponent yards per pass attempt but everything else improved. Pretty impressive stuff IMO.

It use to be if Gus could have an average D, he could compete for a NC every year. Last year the D was burdened by Gus's Offense.

I expect something close to what we had last year. Id like to see it a tad better and will be hoping for that. I totally believe he was benefited some last year by the work and recruiting Muschamp did the year before

There is zero reasons, baring major injuries, for the defense to fall off. We did not lose a lot of guys and we added some talent. They should know how to play defense by now

The guy had us top 10 in scoring defense last year and it can only get better with 9 starters returning to one of the most talented and experienced defenses auburn has had to date.

We literally return our whole LB corps and 4 out of 5 DB's are returning. We gotta replace Lawson and MA on the DLine but the next players up are not too shabby.

Steele has been a night and day difference and you can tell in the tackling from the LSU game from 2015 to 2016 that we got better.

2017 will be tremendous, it may not be a 2004 defensive season where we only gave up 1 rushing td but it could be close.

I expect a small drop off. I don't believe we will just plug and play the loss of Carl and Monty. Obviously having a QB who is more than average is what I hope will bring the O forward to offset the small drop in performance for the D.

That being said, it won't shock me if the D is better than last year. Just not expecting it.

we are deeper now than last year actually, I think Derrick Brown and Davison can make up for the lost of those two.

Well their second string would start for every other team and their secondary is tops in the SEC. If you don't believe it, just ask them.

That's really interesting and similar to the situation LSU was in. We were sure that because Steele and Chief knew each other well that Steele could just continue with Chief's scheme, philosophy, etc and that 2015 would be a continuation of the 2014 end-of-season defense. Obviously that didn't happen. Perhaps Steele learned and just used what Champ had installed? Do you think he kept a lot of the same things? At LSU he tried installing zone schemes into a defense that had little experience in running zone outside of cover 2 shell man free and cover 1 shell man free and it wasn't pretty.

Is he supposed to be the pass rushing guy like Lawson was when he stood up at the end of the line? What do you expect from him?

He's been calling for a 15-0 run to the title for months.

Yeah he seems pretty bullish on Auburn this year but more power to him.

Yea, that is why I said it won't shock me. Carl and Monty both were draftable talents. That is fact. I wish I had a $100 for every CFB who we believed was going to be great and never did much beyond some glimmers of hope. Not saying that will be true of DB or MD, but until they show they can handle the top positions I never assume they will. It is easier to play when the guys around you are demanding double teams.

Again not saying they won't. I qualified my original statement. Just saying until they do it, I don't expect it.

My glasses aren't orange and blue enough to agree with this much improvement but I do agree that improved tackling is the biggest change. Not that Boom didn't know how to teach kids how to tackle, I think their poor habits were too ingrained to change it in only one year.

He's more of an inside guy with the ability to line up outside in certain situations. Davidson is the edge guy, but he didn't show great pass rushing skills as a true freshman. He certainly could develop them. James and Holland will likely provide our edge rush. Russell will be the key inside guy this year IMO.

No he is a big guy inside. I think he should fill the Monty Adams role. He will have a experienced tackle beside him in Russell that will help

Outside rushers are going to be Marlon Davidson who played very well last year and probably Jeff Holland who up to this point has been just a few good plays and a lot of hope by us fans

Truth is we are much more talented and deeper than we have been in years. If Carl hadn't got hurt in 2015 it would have made a huge difference in people's perception of Boom in 2015. Once he got healthy the DL played picked up significantly.

Has the top two deep defense in the SEC

Hell, 12 of the 14 schools would call Steele's second string starters. The other two teams they would split snaps at the very least.

Thanks for the info. What about the LBs and DBs? You guys said you return the lot at LB. Is Steele handling the LBs? And about the DBs, what do you guys expect? It looks like an experienced group with some very talented guys. LSU didn't get a good look at them last year really because we were so ground and pound but this season should be a little different.

I'll entertain this idea. Who are the two who wouldn't call the second string starters?
