There's a precedent for UK buying out of a contract with smaller schools. I wouldn't be surprised if Barnhart has written the contract so that we can pay USM and get out of the 2017 game.
UK did that with ECU several years ago and scheduled EKU at home instead. It infuriated the Pirates but we desperately needed a sixth home game that year.

I nominate for come back of the year.

More self-depricating(sp) humor, two SEC schools fans arguing over who has lost to USM the least. That's all tLandmass right there.

We'll buyout USM for 2017. Just needed to cover the UAB game for next season. Commonwealth Stadium holds 20,000 more people than even live in Hattiesburg. Hell, more people live in Nicholasville, a Lexington suburb, than do Hattiesburg. No, we won't be giving them the return game as much as the peanut gallery on here wishes it to be so. Mitch gave em a reason to sign on the dotted line and we'll pay them off next year.

Your buyout will probably save USM's program for a few more years. Us playing them these last two years have propped them up for a few more years.

From where does this hate stem?
All I know is I didn't realize just how deep the hate was until we had to drive through Hattiesburg on vacation.
The hate is real folks. You have no idea.

I always figured southern miss fans were Ole Miss and Mississippi state fans who lived in Hattiesburg and also rooted for the local school. Like I'm a UK fan but like to see schools like NKU, MSU, Morehead state etc. do well.
So USM has actual "USM only" fans?

Who stopped the long running series with Indiana? Was it IU or UK? It's a natural rivalry and UK/IU should start it up again. At least it's a P5 school.

That's such a Kentucky thing to do. How embarrassing.
You realize that Kentucky scrambled to get a game on the books due to the UAB dissolving? UK had to schedule someone quickly and there was not too many options besides a DIIA team to replace the UAB game in 16.
Know what the frick you are spouting before smacking.

Myself, I don't have a problem with USM. Ole Miss fans seem to hate USM with a holy passion. Now, back in the early 80's when I was a young fella in Middle School, USM fans were pretty obnoxious. Their seasons were made if they beat Ole Miss and State, moreso Ole Miss than State. Then Ole Miss refused to play them after 1984, and the MS Legislature even got involved(but it didn't pass). I can see Ole Miss' reasoning, but it made them look like cowards since USM had beaten their arse's most of the last games they played. Oh yes, almost forgot this story, USM's first win over Ole Miss came in 1970 against the Archie Manning led number 1 ranked Rebs, 30-14. USM has never let the Rebs live it down.

Southern Miss fans are LSU fans that are bored on LSU's off week

We probably saw more State gear/decals driving through there then we ever did Southern Miss. I made the comment to HJJ that I was surprised by the lack of Southern Miss "decor" as we were driving through. Even here in Louisville you see enough around town that you know UofL is here on the way through between that and the fan decals/flags on cars and such. We saw the one Southern Miss sign and that was it. It was kind of bizarre.

Southern has only beaten us like 5 or 6 times. We've beaten them around 20 IIRC

There are probably as many or more State fans in Hattiesburg than USM fans, which is sad. We'll have about 70 percent of the fans at their stadium on opening weekend. I have been to numerous MSU-USM baseball games throughout the years in Hattiesburg and we take the place over.

Does anyone know the story as to why Brett Farvruh went to Southern?

I wouldn't mind bringing back the Bourbon Barrel. I don't remember why it got dropped in 2005 but that was around the same time we were in the thick of probation so I wouldn't be surprised if it had to do with that.
They can go frick themselves in basketball though.

Sounds like USM is equivalent to WKU, with a minority of USM/WKU only hardcores but mostly all MSU/OM or UK/UofL fans. The next time I meet an EKU fan who isn't a UK fan also will be the first

Actually, I think it is 18-7, but most of those 7 came in the last 10 games of the series. I'm telling you, and I remember it, in the late 70's and early 80's USM played the Ole Miss game like it was the Super Bowl. They wanted to beat them worse than anyone, State and Bama included.

1. His daddy was his high school coach and they ran the triple option. Even though, Brett had a cannon Irv Favre would not change the offense to suit Brett.
2. Therefore, MSU was his only major offer and that was to play safety.
3. Brett was set to go to Delta St to play QB, when USM had an extra scholarship come avaliable.
4. Brett accepted but was told he was 7th on the depth chart without much of a chance of moving up(this was mostly a favor to Irv Favre who had played baseball at USM).
5. The rest is history.
