And also agree the "worst to first" mantra is stupid as hell. He was the coach last year...not like he took over a last place team of mostly the same players and turned it into conference champion. I'm not saying Cohen doesn't deserve coach of the year, but the "worst to first" bit sound not play a single role into the decision.

And let me add this, no pitcher always has control. The same pitchers who hit a batter also couldn't deliver across the plate. Lsu fans you never experienced that yourselves?

So you'd be okay with Nick Saban winning COTY practically every year?

Why not? A coach doesn't perform his job for a given year all in that year. Four or five years of recruiting before that is also part of his performance. After recruiting for four or five years, if he has the best players, that means he's done a better job than any other coach in the lead-up to the year in question and all that remains is to go out and perform with it. When he wins the NC, that's about as well as anyone can perform. So, how can anyone be said to have done a better job?

Agreed. I call it the John Brady strategy. He used it while coaching basketball at LSU. It consists of setting the bar so low that practically anything will be an improvement, then pointing to improvement as evidence of doing a good job.

If Cohen had finished 5th in the SEC last year (as Mainieri did this year in a rebuilding year, for example), it would be a bigger indication that he is doing a good job, but would not be a "worst to first" turnaround. Why should he be rewarded for doing such a bad job last year?

Cohen has gone from worst to first 2 times now. First was with UK.

Exactly right. He took over a UK program with little history in baseball and won the Sec title outright before doing it at MSU. Haters gonna be haters but the man can coach.

ULL was just better than us that year. We didn't blow anything.

Should just go to the coach of the best team. Who cares if they sucked last year?

he won't win it, nor am I saying he should, but this may arguably be Mainieri's best coaching job since he's been in Baton Rouge. LSu replaced 8 position players and had it's ace, Alex Lange, as well as Poche struggle for huge chunks of the year, and LSU was still somehow able to put things together and put themselves in position to play for a national seed in the SECT and have all but guaranteed a host site for a regional. Remember, they also started 2-6 in the league and closed out with a record of 17-5.

FIFY

and he's still 22 games below .500 in the SEC in 8 years at Mississippi State. He had a very nice post season run in 2012, but he's been a pretty average coach comparative to the rest of this league throughout his career

That's real nice. Your coach replaced a bunch of starters? Care to look at MSU's roster? It's the Soph and Freshmen doing so much damage. There goes that argument.

Yeah terrible coach. Won an outright SEC title with UK before coming home and doing it at MSU. Got us to the national title games in 2013. You right, he is terrible.

Well I guess LSU has a lot to prove post season then. Guess we will have to see what happens.

Nathaniel Lowe - junior
Jack Kruger - junior
Jacob Robson - junior
Brent Rooker - RS sophomore, 2 year starter
Reid Humphreys - junior
Gavin Collins - junior
Ryan Grindley - sophomore, 2 year starter
Cody Brown - junior

Just because your best player is a freshman doesn't mean your entire team is young. You actually have likely one of the most experienced teams in the SEC

If LSU had won the Conference title you'd be the first one here talking trash. If LSU post season don't work out you'll say "Young team." Amirite?

Msu has a damn young team and we don't make excuses.

Not sure what last year has to do with it. I'm pretty sure state was a unanimous top 15 preseason. South Carolina was on no ones radar and is about to be a national seed.
