Self is a better coach than Cal, period. He's won ten straight conference titles in one of the best league in the country. To think he couldn't do what cal has done at Kentucky of all places is silly.

Calipari is not an elite coach. He's an elite recruiter. He out talents every team he faces, yet only one national title in the books. Add in his recruiting is certainly shady considering the WWW ties. Yea..overrated. though so is Self. He gets out coached often in the tourney.

In Cal's career he has won 17 conference titles. 5 in a row to close out his time at UMASS and 4 straight at Memphis.

Since Cal has been in the SEC it was either him or another HOF coach in Billy D winning the conference. Self has never had to deal with an opposing coach of that quality on the other sideline during his tenure.

All I know is I would chop off both my Cadbury eggs to have either one of those guys over Johnny fricking Jones.

Seriously it is like the first nearly 20 years of his coaching career doesn't exist to some people. He only coached 6 first rounders in his combined years at UMASS and Memphis. Only 3 of them have had any sort of NBA career to speak of.

Welcome to CBB. Everyone's recruiting is shady.

Here's the thing. In college basketball, the regular season is practically meaningless. The only thing that matters is what happens in March. Self's record in the NCAA tournament is uninspiring compared to the other great coaches from this era. Self is 53 years old. Pretty much every great coach in this era from Izzo to Calipari to Roy Williams to Pitino all had four or five Final Four appearances when they were the same age as Self. Billy Donovan is three years younger than Self and has four Final Four appearances at a far lesser basketball program in Florida. I'm not that impressed with what Self's umpteen number of conference titles. It's the equivalent of a NFL team winning their division 12+ years in a row and getting to the conference championship game only twice over that time span. Basically the Tony Dungy of college basketball.

Self has not had the last 2 universities he coached at incur sanctions to the extent wins were vacated & monies returned for recruiting violations that happened under his watch. And, yea, OK. Right. With the 2 top players in the country involved both times, with a roster of 13 players and a coaching staff of 10+, Calipari did not know what was going on. Sure.

Nah, instead he has guys like Josh Selby sitting out 9 games for impermissible benefits.

If you think Self is some saint that doesn't cheat like any other major D1 coach, I don't know what to tell you.

Camby's issues were largely his friends and families playing different agents for money and gifts.

The Derrick Rose infractions happened when he was still in high school

His Illinois program was notoriously dirty and Kansas was put on probation early in his tenure there.

This whole thing is just so odd. Multiple coaches have had much worse things happen during their tenures, but because the NCAA decided to retroactively deem two of Cal's players ineligible things get vacated. Other guys just get postseason bans, scholarship reductions, and suspensions. I don't understand it.

Every current HOF coach has had NCAA issues. Two of them were banned from the postseason just this season. That is about as big of an "everybody does it" you can get.

No I enjoy the discourse with basketball illiterate SEC Rant

I just ignore yours because you haven't made an actual point of any meaning in any Cal thread I can ever remember. I enjoy your posting though, so if you'd like to come up with some new material I am sure it will be good.

No, he's a cheater. He's gonna be called a cheater whenever he's brought up for all eternity. You're just gonna have to deal with it.

Bo Ryan and tom Izzo are going into the hall of fame this year. Don't cheat

Bo cheats on his wife. But that's a different kind of cheating

Sorry. All coaches don't cheat. And they sure as hell don't have final fours vacated

You basically found the only 2 clean guys out there. Izzo has pretty much said the reason he hasn't had more success is that he misses out on a lot of guys because everyone cheats

Took Bo until the last 2 years of his career to reach the Final Four. No titles.

Again I want someone to explain why this is worse than the no postseason at all and all sorts of other sanctions. People seem to act like Cal would have just played Camby and Rose has been deemed ineligible by the NCAA.
