Can't say I'd be shocked if they got rid of Gene...

A name I heard floated by an Aubie friend of mine is Jimbo Fisher. I told him there was no way JF leaves FSU. He replied, "His people called AU".
I'm not saying this is fact; I just thought it was very interesting.

Your friend has been reading message board rumors for the past two weeks and is rehashing what he saw on the interwebz.

Bama fan, I hear Kirby Smart is not ready... I do not want, but that is the hot name... Your guys thoughts?
I'd feel personally jilted. I like Kirby but would have to learn to hate him if he went to the enemy.
I just don't see it as plausible. Not sure where that rumor is coming from.
I'd be shocked if he were on thet list.

I'd have to say.. the short list would be something like..
Chris Petersen
Petrino
Cutcliffe
Gus Malzahn
Todd Monken
Kirby Smart
That would be an interesting hire. Would he be able to impliment a pro style offense or would he stick with his style of O?

High potential but high risk. Until he's out on his own, you simply can't know how much of the success is Kirby and how much is Saban. There are also some guys that do well as coordinators but can't take the final step. I believe y'all have some recent experience with that phenomenon.
Auburn in particular cannot afford another miss.
IMHO, if Smart wants to be a HC in the SEC he's going to go the Malzhan route and take a Sun Belt or CUSA type job.
So, to answer your question directly. Auburn (or Arky or Tennessee) no. Kentucky, maybe. Southern Mississippi, absolutely.

As JayGTate have said many times here, and I'm sure you're tired of reading it, complicated problems like the ones we see at Auburn right now take time to remedy. Someone has to identify the problem, excise it and find something/someone else to repair the damage.
What's the latest with that?
The big story to me right now is Jay Gogue. The university president is either showing or attempting to show that he'll be nobody's lapdog. Unofficial representatives have come to him and Gogue is mostly rebuking them either politely or, in some cases, impolitely. This is something new* to the Auburn athletics ecosystem. It's not being taken well by those attempting to wield their influence.
A week ago, I'd have been surprised to learn that Jay Jacobs will be the athletic director during the Georgia game. There was nearly unanimous support for the idea of moving Jacobs as soon as possible among The Unofficials, we'll call them, but Gogue once again asserted his influence. He reiterated his stance that decisions aren't made during the season. He also told at least one insider recently that he believes Jacobs is the right man to manage the athletic department going forward.
Some will read this and say it's a smokescreen; that Gogue is simply putting on a good show to assert his autonomy conspicuously. That certainly was my initial interpretation. With that said, Gogue's approach to this whole situation has angered and/or annoyed people that Gogue probably would prefer not be angered and/or annoyed with him. He's taking a risk here. That makes me believe he's legitimate in this show of autonomy.
How does this affect things? Well, Jacobs presumably would remain in place if Gogue gets his way. Also, Gogue may assert similar levels of influence over a coaching search if one comes to fruition. Or if he were to decide that Gene Chizik should remain as head coach. While some people will bite their tongue when it comes to decisions at AD, decisions about Auburn's football coach inspire far more passion. Gogue's influence there will be an unwelcome development regardless.
Again, a lot can and will happen between now and Jan. 1, 2013. What looks like a sure bet today could be old news next week. My role is to give you the clearest picture of what's happening right now -- and that's what I have done.

As long as Saban is at Bama,Auburn is not a desired job. It has always been the number two school in the state.

Shawn Watson at Auburn?
BY Sam McKewon | POSTED IN Big Red Today
According to a report from Auburn Undercover, the former Nebraska offensive coordinator — who’s now coordinating undefeated Louisville’s offense — is a potential candidate at Auburn should the Tigers fire Gene Chizik.
The report says that AU President Jay Gogue told the school’s Board of Trustees last week that, if Chizik were replaced, the school would like to move quickly to name his successor. And Watson, according to the report, was a candidate that Gogue mentioned.

Jimbo may get a look but he's WAY down the list compared to a few others.
