In 2007 he sucked at Bama
Managed to go 7-6 with the least talented Bama team in the last 45 years that didn't have a single player drafted. Was 2 minutes away from potentially upsetting eventual national champions LSU, and took one of the best Georgia teams of all time to overtime.

I think this type of question has evolved similarly to the NFL question, of who is the 2nd best coach in the NFL right now? We all know who is the best and that is Belichick. The same question needs to be asked in college as well, who is the 2nd best college coach today? We all know the best is Saban. So, to answer your question, is Saban a great coach, well I dont know but he is better than everyone else and that is all that matters.

Urban Meyer. I think he'd be getting a lot of attention as one of the better all time coaches if he wasn't in saban's shadow.

The ONLY thing that matters in sports is winning. How you win (better talent) or (out scheming X's & O's) is irrelevant.
Recruiting is 80% of college sports.
Really good coaches at mid-majors usually leave those jobs for better jobs, because they can win more. Therefore, the coaches at the "great recruiting" programs are guys who paid their dues and deserved the job.
Saban paid his dues. Saban earned the right to be a coach at great recruiting schools like LSU and then Bama. Once there, he won championships. At Bama, he's winning championships at an unbelievable level.
Not every coach that gets an opportunity to coach at a great recruiting school has great success (see Zook & Muschamp at FL; Hackett, Kiffin, Sark at USC; all the Texas coaches in the 80's & 90's before Brown, Cooper at Ohio State, etc, etc, etc).
Yes, Saban is a great, great coach. In every way.

Was a very good d coordinator. I would say he has done some things game management wise that have been wrong but every coach does. Evolved with the times by understanding he needed better offense. Can't just win with D anymore. Gets the best players and develops them well.
Coaching: Above average to good
Recruiting: Possibly the best ever considering that it isn't as easy to get away with stuff than in the past.

We all know he's won a lot of Championships. But has he won them because he has recruited great players. Or because he's a great X & O. I know what the cousin humpers will say. What does the rant think?

Not a question of if but rather just how great is Nick Saban.

Well it is not like his defense is particularly innovative or complex anymore, at least not moreso than a lot of coaches nowadays. I certainly don't think he is anything extraordinary when it comes to gameday coaching. He is a good developer of talent and he does instill discipline and fundamentals, combined that with the most elite talent and you have something pretty special
he has mastered the modern college football system...much like bryant gained mastery of the system in his day to pull in the best talent, he does the same. If there is a rule he may walk the fine line on it, if there isn't he will ride it until their is one.
and with back to back to back to back to back top recruiting classes, make no mistake about it he is overwhelming teams with pure talent and depth of talent. You can go and see what is record is when he has good to great talent as opposed to elite if you would like. It is good but nothing extraordinary
He has evolved with the cfb system over the years, one day he will get tired of keeping up with the race and that will be the day he decides to retire
All things considered, of course he is a great coach when you speak of all the things required to be a great coach in modern college football
He recruits like no other, he recruits to his system, he develops depth, he develops talent, instills discipline and fundamentals in that elite talent...honestly once you have it all figured out here, any decent manager can get the pieces in place to have the X' and O's work themselves out

quote:This is the toughest division in the strongest conference in the nation. And Nick Saban has lost 5 SEC games in 5 years, it's all the media hype I'm sure.
Average at Michigan State. Bad in the NFL. Other than 2003 and an upset in the SECCG in 01 he was average at LSU. In 2007 he sucked at Bama, then he got his first #1 recruiting class all thanks to the media hype from when he was hired

They will ask if Nick Saban is really a great coach, evidently.

So your theory is that he is so good at his job that he's bad at it?

How about both. He's a defensive genius.
And even at Miami, he had that defense at #4 in total defense and #5 in scoring defense when he left.
